@Jura

Chinese people read the Chinese version of Xinhua, which is very different fro the sanitised English version.

Above the fold, on the front page of the Chinese web version, I can see a bunch of upbeat stories and also an article on how 5 electric vehicle companies defrauded the government out of 260 million RMB.

===

If I look at the front page of praguemonitor.com which you used as an example - it looks awfully upbeat to me and completely different from the business section that you previously quoted.

The northern rust belt are just artificial product of industrial policy in Mao's china.

The north-eastern rustbelt was a result of the area's early industrialisation which started during the Japanese occupation. There were coal and iron deposits, and it actually produced more steel and coal than the Japanese home islands.

So after WW2, there was an industrial legacy which was built on. Then oil was also discovered at Daqing, and the next wave of heavy industry was located there because it was next to the Soviet Union, so it was the logical location for Soviet assistance to flow to.

But it is now suffering like other rustbelt areas that we see in the rest of the world.

I know that but right after liberation why build Shenyang as the hub of aerospace manufacturing and Changchun as the hub for automobile manufacturing .

I can understand if steel industry is located n North East since there is where the raw material come from
Anshan steel company is originally Japanese owned factory.

I guess they realized their vulnerability by concentrating so much of their heavy industry in the north east. And during the Soviet China schism they move the aerospace industry to Sichuan

Where else should they have located heavy industry like automobiles and aerospace?

It was where coal, iron, steel was and the only place with lots of other supporting industries and companies.

Transport communication costs and the absence of any other industrial clusters in China were key factors

Talk about news, do ya think all the negative report about PRC by the media had this poor beautiful young Chinese American getting some negative comments (she's got a lot of encouragement as well)? I wouldn't be surprise.

Arianna Quan made history when she became the first Asian-American and naturalized citizen to be named Miss Michigan – but not everyone was happy about it.
"A lot of people have reached out to me, both extremely negatively and positively," Quan, 23, tells PEOPLE. "It's been a very polarizing response. It's been really interesting to see the discussions that have been erupting from just me being crowned, and it's been an extremely humbling experience to be a part of those conversations."Quan's crowning received media attention domestically as well as abroad in her native China."All this negativity came out, especially about my appearance and how I'm apparently unfit to represent the Chinese population because I'm 'ugly,' " she says.But she isn't letting the

," says Quan. "My goal is to just drive the conversation in an important direction, because there are so many things we have to discuss about immigration and diversity in this country right now."

To that end, Quan's platform issue is "Being American: Immigration & Citizenship Education."
"It's something that started this past year when I started competing because of what I saw throughout the selection year," she says. "Immigrants and first-generation Americans are deeply underrepresented. My platform is about engaging minorities in this country, and about prompting Americans that have been here for generations to celebrate their culture."The automotive design student hopes to bring pride to underrepresented groups as she competes for the

crown.
"[Winning] would mean being able to represent a population of people in this country that are underrepresented right now: the immigrant population, the first-generation American population, Asian-Americans," she says. "I think it would mean exponentially more to them than it would to me."The 2017 Miss America competition airs Sunday, September 11 at 9/8c on ABC.

It sounds like most of the negative comments came from the Chinese community since she said some thought she was "too ugly to represent the Chinese population". that sounds a lot like what some Chinese would say...

NOT me! I would propose to her right than and there.:D;)

Hahaha!

I think she is good-looking, but only slightly above average, IMO. However, I don't have any problem whatsoever with her competing on Miss America. She is not representing anyone but herself. So no need to be too sensitive about it just because she happens to share some similar physical features with some of us. One needs confidence and courage to put oneself out there in front of a whole nation and let people judge. I know I don't dare to do anything close to that.

This is not relevant to economics at all... come on guys, we can do better than talking about a literal beauty contest here...
