I can't help but think Trump's anti-China policy is going to be remembered as a historical event, the turning point that turned cooperation into competition that will ultimately bring the downfall of the United States
Let’s not forget why this happened..

TikTok users registered for all the tickets at a Trump rally then didn’t show up, so when Trump got there there was no crowd to hear his nonsense.

Good riddance to Australia. China impoted so much from but it still decided to go anti-China.

Time to spread that money around in ASEAN, Russia, Brazil and Africa. Better to get influence there than Australia

Anybody here knowledgeable in the Chinese auto industry?

From what I've seen, it seems like there are very few companies with strong branding and lineups like BYD and Geely

The rest, especially the SOEs seem focused on making a million different brand names, JVs, crappy rebadges or foreign models. (Roewe, trumpchi, gonow, besturn??? What is up with these god-awful names?)

Is there any sign of consolidation into national champion brands like Korea's Kia and Japan's Toyota?

Well there is SAIC. While it has the crappy sounding ROEWE in its stable its MG has broken through to be No8 in the top ten cars sold in Australia beating the likes of Volkswagen Honda and Subaru in sales. If one was to consider the friction between the two countries, this would have to be considered a terrific breakthrough.

Although it's nearly 4yrs old it's a good article describing SAICs effort in the Western Market.

Big Chinese car makers like BAIC, FAW, Great Wall, Chang An, and GAIG etc are getting stronger.
It seems there are way more car brands than smartphone brands.

Just like cell phone brands I think some of those aspiring EV makers will drop out or get bought out by the majors.

To date Great Wall have promised a lot in the Australia/NZ market but always falling short. Having said that the 2021 Model of the UTE the Great Wall Cannon in its various models has drawn good reports and maybe the breakthrough model it's been trying for. It now waiting for crash test reports which could make or break it. Given that a lot of the time Chinese vehicles get criticized for their road handling characteristics, so perhaps they could consult with local experts who are more familiar with western driver expectations.
Decades earlier Toyota had trouble cracking the NZ market, so they called in Chris Amon who was a Formula One driver was brought in as a consultant. He fine tuned tuned the suspension. From 70's through the 80's Toyota cars carried an extra badging "Amon Tuned" and sales really took off.

Hayden Paddon would be a great candidate for GW.
