Mattis talked about withdraw or cut US troops in SK in exchange for NK to denuclear. he may have two considerations, firstly the US must give sth, secondly the US troop in SK are deployed too close to the frontier which makes them vulnerable. the hawks may not like the idea, for them that's a big cave in to Kim.

DPRK confirms demolition of nuclear test site

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has confirmed the demolition of its nuclear test site at Punggye-ri Thursday, saying all its tunnels have been collapsed by explosions and their entrances completely closed, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

The Nuclear Weapons Institute of the DPRK issued a statement saying that a ceremony was held "for completely dismantling the northern nuclear test ground ... to ensure transparency of the discontinuance of nuclear tests."

"Dismantling the nuclear test ground was done in such a way as to make all the tunnels of the test ground collapse by explosion and completely close the tunnel entrances, and at the same time, explode some guard facilities and observation posts on the site," the statement said.

The statement also said it has been confirmed that there was neither leakage of radio-active materials nor any adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment.

A complete closure of the area surrounding the nuclear test ground will come after a successive removal of all ground observation facilities, research institutes and structures of guard units, and withdrawal of staff concerned, it said.

The three tunnels of the test site were blown up by 16:00 local time (0700 GMT), according to Xinhua reporters at the site.

Pyongyang invited journalists from China, Russia, the United States, South Korea and Britain to witness the site's dismantlement.

The DPRK conducted six nuclear tests at Punggye-ri between October 2006 and September 2017.

According to an official from the Nuclear Weapons Institute, Thursday's demolition was done to the remaining three tunnels at the test site, on the northern, western and southern sides, respectively.

The official told international journalists invited to witness the closure that the north tunnel was used to carry out the country's second to sixth nuclear tests conducted between 2009 and 2017, and that the west and south tunnels had been completed and could have been used to conduct further tests at any time.

The east tunnel, according to the official, had already been abandoned and blown up after the first nuclear test in 2006.

The Third Plenary Meeting of the Seventh Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea decided last month that the country will discontinue its nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic rocket test-firings from April 21.

Commentary: Pyongyang's significant step towards Korean Peninsula denuclearization

The dismantlement of the Punggye-ri underground nuclear test site on Thursday marked a significant initiative by Pyongyang and sent a strong signal to Washington while situation on the Korean Peninsula has once again reached a critical juncture.

Punggye-ri was where the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted all its six nuclear tests. Its dismantlement before the eyes of foreign reporters testifies to Pyongyang's sincerity to honor its promises on denuclearization and push for a political solution of the Korean Peninsula issue.

Pyongyang has made various eye-catching moves in domestic and foreign policies this year. Domestically the country announced a new strategy focusing on economic development, replacing the old one that prioritized both economy and nuclear capabilities.

On the foreign policy front, DPRK leader Kim Jong Un made two visits to China and met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at a historic inter-Korean summit, and has a meeting scheduled with U.S. President Donald Trump next month in Singapore.

Coming at a crucial moment when major parties are working hard to achieve reconciliation and peace on the Peninsula, the dismantlement of the Punggye-ri underground nuclear test site demonstrates Pyongyang's commitment to denuclearization, consolidating the detente needed for a political settlement of the Peninsula issue. It certainly deserves the applause and support of the international community.

The Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, a security issue in nature, largely evolves around the interactions between the DPRK and the United States. Their tit-for-tats since the 1990s have repeatedly led to tensions and crises.

To the relief of many, things started to turn for the better this year as Kim affirmed Pyongyang's intention to denuclearize the Peninsula and Trump responded positively to Pyongyang's security concerns.

For Pyongyang and Washington, a shift from confrontation and unilateral moves to dialogue and consultation addressing each other's core concerns is a big step in the right direction. Pyongyang's dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site will help build mutual trust and create a good atmosphere for the planned meeting between their leaders.

History and reality decide that the way ahead to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue could not be easy. The world expects that at a key juncture, both Pyongyang and Washington could stay committed and make the dismantlement of Punggye-ri nuclear test site a fresh starting point for them to move further to meet each other halfway.

It is expected that they would make use of the historic opportunity, increase dialogues to expand consensus, and promote Peninsula denuclearization in a dual-track approach as China advocates, benefiting stability and peace on the Peninsula as well as security and prosperity in the region.

what does Kim Jong Un want?

Pompeo is certainly more competent than that, the condition set by the US is simple: comprehensive, verifiable, irreversable denuclearization. but Pompeo never told us what Kim wanted, and why was the US unwilling to accept Kim's requests?

China and Russia voted for the crushing UN sanction against NK not unconditionally, if it turns out that it is the US that trying to obstruct the denuclearization, then there's no point to keep the sanction.

What Kim wants is abundantly clear: security first, economic development second (the lifting of all kinds of sanctions, not so much a package of economic aids).

Throughout the process, the US has made it very clear that it wants: CVID. But the US has never been clear what it will offer or whether it is willing to address NK's needs. Yes, it said several times that it will offer economic aids, but that's clearly not Kim's needs. Lately, it's become more insulting (from NK's perspective) that the US wants a Libya model, which is a non-starter for Kim and NK. It's not that the US does not understand what NK wants.

China calls on DPRK, U.S. to continue efforts for denuclearization of Korean Peninsula

China said Friday that it hoped the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States would cherish the recent progress and continue to address mutual concerns via dialogue and push for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang made the remarks at a daily press briefing when responding to a question on U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement to cancel the DPRK-U.S. summit.

The recent momentum towards dialogue and easing of situation on the Korean Peninsula is hard won, and there is a rare historic opportunity for political settlement, Lu said.

The parties concerned, including both the DPRK and the United States showed their intention to advance the denuclearization of the Peninsula through dialogue and consultation, and have made active efforts to this end, Lu said.

"The Chinese government's stance on the Korean Peninsula issue is clear and consistent," Lu said, adding that China believes that, the meeting between DPRK and U.S. leaders plays a key role in advancing the denuclearization of the Peninsula.

Under the current circumstances, China hopes both the DPRK and the United States can cherish the recent positive progress, stay patient, demonstrate goodwill, meet each other halfway and continue to address mutual concerns through dialogue and consultation, to advance the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Lu said.

When responding to a question on DPRK's dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, Lu said the move was an important step the DPRK made in denuclearization and was significant for advancing the denuclearization of the Peninsula.

It fairly obvious the US wanted CVID and was willing to give nothing except promises of economic relief. That in itself is the Libya model; we'll take your weapons first, but TRUST us, we will hold up our end of the bargain when you have nothing to defend yourself with.

Trump needed Kim to accept the Libya model because it was his only way of selling "a win" to his base; look, I got NK to give up it's nukes and I didn't have to compromise one bit - unlike that Obama idiot and his stinking Iran deal!

At no time did Trump's people indicate they gave a crap re NK's wants.
