After the pullout of US troops the Taliban is gaining ground in Afghanistan. There are lots of talks between China and Talibans about the future of the country.

The major objective for China is to have Afghanistan not supporting ETIM in Xinjiang. There are also some economic deals to be made but I think that it's a secondary objective.

Would China be able to befriend Talibans in the same way they befriended Pakistan? Will the Taliban be able to create a central government or is the tribalism too strong even for them? Other Muslim nations from Saudi to Pakistan support China in Xinjiang, is there any ideological difference that would make Taliban different or are they just as pragmatic?

FM of China Mr. Wang Yi has just met with the Taliban delegation at Tianjin yesterday.
2 things China can certainly provide to the future Taliban government:
economic development, and
international recognition and legitimacy in the UN.
In turn, China is asking the Taliban to go the moderate and pragmatic route, and strive for national reconciliation and peace.
the Afghan people have suffered enough war, blood shed and misery, it's time to rebuild their war torn nation and society.

If PRC has any sense whatsoever it will build a big wall along its border with Afghanistan + 100km either side just in case and have nothing whatsoever to do with the place save for lobbing a few precision munitions over the border at any terrorist group in there threatening China.

The actual border itself with Afghanistan isn't really a problem. Since it is very narrow and small. It can be easily blocked off even without massive infrastructure. The borders with neighboring the Stans countries can be an issue.

what you prescribed is the American method of dealing with a problem, bomb, bombs and more bombs.
but to root out terrorism, you have to provide the people with education and social development-->better livelihood, exactly the kind of thing China is doing in Xinjiang.

Exactly, education and jobs are the ingredients for a stable society. Bombs never win hearts of the people, only create hatreds.

China's approach to Afghanistan does not appear to be stand alone, but part of its Strategic Partnership with Russia and indeed Pakistan and Iran. In short all it appears that all those with influence in the country are trying to promote a unified confidence building policy with the hope of pacifying all the major players and calming things down.
After so many decades of fighting, even the Taliban must be tired of endless warfare and ready to settle things down and allow rebuilding to start. No doubt there will be jockeying for position during and in the wake of the NATO withdrawal, but maybe the reticence of the Taliban to try and take cities, at this time, is an indication of a greater desire to gain leverage for a negotiated settlement?
Maybe, we will see.....
