Foreign SEZ investors to enjoy full ownership benefit in Pakistan....

The federal government has decided in principle that foreigners who invest in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) will be entitled to 100 per cent ownership and there will be no condition regarding the minimum amount of investment. A high-level committee has also been set up to review a proposal that non-resident Pakistanis be given a tax holiday on all kinds of income on investments including property, capital gains, dividends and profits on loans.

It has also been decided that investors in SEZs will be allowed to take abroad 100 per cent of their profit money.

According to a document made available to The Express Tribune, the government has decided to introduce Amendments in the Special Economic Zones Act under which the privilege package finalized for SEZs will be made part of the investment policy.

According to the document, it has been decided in principle that, in the proposed privilege package to promote investment in SEZs, 100 per cent foreign ownership will be given to those investing in sectors included in the SEZs’ priority list and that this will be made part of the Special Economic Zones Act. The document further states that it has also been decided that the Board of Investment (BOI) will provide the justification, in consultation with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), as to why 100 per cent foreign ownership cannot be allowed in certain sectors.

The document elaborates that the FBR and the BOI will prepare recommendations on the tax holiday proposal for non-resident Pakistanis. The committee will include representatives from the BOI, the Ministries of Finance and Industries & Production, and the FBR. The BOI has nominated CPEC Investment Board Project Director Asim Ayub as the focal person for the committee.

It has also been decided that the FBR and the Ministries of Finance, and Industries and Production will also appoint focal persons for the committee.

The committee will present a report on the tax exemption proposal for non-resident Pakistanis. Similarly, it will also present a report on taxes for residents on income from other sources under the Income Tax Ordinance

If Pakistan can find a better deal , then go for it. It is good competition. Deals aren't forced. China should also not approve any deal that's too risky or not practical. A deals under China Belt & Road benefit both sides. So any deal deemed not workable can be cancelled and that is good management not buyer's remorse.

Fuel loading under way at first Pakistani Hualong One
02 December 2020

The process of loading a total of 177 fuel assemblies into the core of the Karachi 2 reactor in Pakistan began on 28 November, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced today. The Chinese-designed Hualong One reactor is scheduled for commercial operation next year.

CNNC said the loading of fuel "marks the unit's entry into the nuclear commissioning stage, and lays a solid foundation for subsequent criticality and grid-connected power generation".

Karachi 2 and 3 are the first export of China's Hualong One design, promoted on the international market as the HPR1000. CNNC noted the construction of the project has also promoted the development of related industries in Pakistan, providing more than 10,000 jobs for the local area.

Construction of unit 2 began in 2015 and unit 3 in 2016. Installation of the reactor internals of Karachi 2 was completed in January 2019, while installation of unit 3's was completed in April this year. The units are scheduled for commercial operation in April 2021 and 2022, respectively.

I always wondered why tourism from China isn't taking place as Chinese are known for their tourism spending throughout the globe

Terrorism is not an issue anymore as the whole terrorist movement is dead (like except for Balochistan I don't remember a terrorist attack happening in Pak for years now),

Due to CPEC I think Pak has some of the most lenient visa policies towards Chinese passport, with E-Visa, Visa on arrival, longer visas

Infrastructure to tourist spots is great as major highways connect most of the country

have 4,5 different terrains, 4 different seasons in one relatively small country

Not only that the cities are great too with almost every amenities of the west available in major cities, historical sites, uber, public transport (in some cities PT is bad tho, we need to work on that)

Pak really need to start marketing campaigns in China to attract tourists to the country as I believe our reputation is that all of Pak looks like Delhi or something with smog and traffic everywhere

Even though its SO far from the truth and these things are outside the fact that Pak is home to some of the most friendliest people on planet (as said by almost every MSM traveler who put Pak right up there when it comes to travel destination)

I'm thinking China's military "hot spot" will be the west end of CPEC

China now seeks to maintain a 2,000-strong security force to protect its investments. The Pakistani government has yet to respond officially. According to CG’s sources, China’s forces already man key sites like the Gwadar port.

They say the federal government will have no choice but to give them official permission. Many in the Arab world and India would be uneasy if China’s troops were stationed in Pakistan alongside its navy’s ships, which often berth at Gwadar.

Pakistan is looking down a deep, dark hole. It needs more than just economic reform. It needs institutional reform if it’s to develop the capabilities and policies it needs to grow. Absent such reform—soon—its instability presents a growing risk to the whole region, from Afghanistan to India and, perhaps, Iran.
