A fireworks factory explosion in Linli county, Hunan province, has claimed the life of one person and injured nine, while six others remain missing as of 4 pm Monday, according to local authorities.

The blast took place at approximately 8:23 am at Shanzhou Fireworks Co, located in Shanzhou village of Tingxiandu township.

Rescue teams are still searching for the six missing people while also providing medical treatment to those in need. All injured individuals are in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries as of Monday afternoon, Hunan Daily reported, adding that rescue efforts are still underway at full capacity.

The fireworks company was established in July 2017 and holds a valid safety production license through September 2027. It employs over 150 workers, most of whom were not in the affected area when the incident happened.
Preliminary investigations by the local fire department indicate that the explosion originated in a single-story reinforced concrete structure.

BEIJING -- In a sweeping nationwide campaign against telecom and online fraud, Chinese police cracked 294,000 cases in 2024, apprehending a large number of suspects, including more than 570 ringleaders, financiers, and key operatives behind the schemes.

Police targeted criminal networks providing illicit support to overseas scam operations. According to the Ministry of Public Security, these groups offered a range of services, including online promotion, money laundering, technical development, and facilitation of illegal border crossings.

Since the start of 2024, China's national anti-fraud center has intensified efforts in early warnings and technical countermeasures, issuing 1.8 million alerts.

In coordination with other agencies, the center intercepted nearly 4.7 billion scam calls and 3.4 billion fraudulent text messages, while blocking 315 billion yuan (about $43.9 billion) in suspected illicit funds.

Simultaneously, the government has intensified public awareness efforts by launching themed initiatives and broadcasting television programs on fraud prevention, aiming to boost public vigilance and strengthen the ability to guard against scams

I worked in China from 2003-2008. Is education and healthcare accessible for all now? Are there really no beggars? I remember the child beggars. Are all the shiny new buildings occupied and not just there for show. Are the people in the countryside still treated as second class citizens?

Talk about putting the most positive spin on things. China faces enormous challenges of a political, economic, and environmental nature, as well as general social problems that it has no plans to deal with (not the least being the problems resulting from the one child policy). It has a slowing economy, a shrinking and aging population, and a political/governmental infrastructure that is dependent on near universal oppression. Add to that widespread environmental degradation. China’s economy was built on low wages, no worker rights and complete disregard for the environment. How long can that last?
