One person killed in fire at Shanghai ethylene glycol plant; no contamination to nearby environment

At least one person was killed during a fire that broke out in the ethylene glycol plant area of Shanghai Petrochemical complex on Saturday morning. The fire is under effective control, and has not contaminated the environment around.

The fire occurred at around 4:30 am on Saturday morning, local media reported, saying that residents nearby heard the sound of an explosion and sensed a pungent smell afterward. Videos show that the whole factory was engulfed by black smog.

A driver at the scene was killed and an employee from the plant suffered a minor injury.

After the fire outbreak, the local department dispatched 563 firefighters.

Roughly five hours later, Shanghai Petrochemical said on Sina Weibo that the fire was effectively under control, and surveillance of the nearby environment shows there was no contamination.

The Ministry of Emergency Management also went to the accident scene to guide the rescue work.

An explosion at a chemical factory in Lanzhou, Northwest China’s Gansu Province has killed six and injured eight, the Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday. The cause of the tragedy remains unknown.

Another one injured has been discharged from hospital. Currently, the vital signs of the other seven injured are stable, the report said, citing doctors.

The explosion happened in a sludge drying plant of Binnong Tech Limited which is located in an industrial park in Lanzhou on Friday. The firm was founded in August 2020, with businesses covering pesticide production and sales, as well as production of hazardous chemicals.

The 600-square meters steel-structure plant – the explosion site – had high temperature and pressure steam, but no inflammable or combustible materials, the China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

There was a power outage in nearby residential areas after the explosion, it said.

The local fire department has sent more than 430 rescue personnel and more than 70 rescue vehicles to participate in the search and rescue work.

A police station located in a county in Inner Mongolia confirmed it was vandalized by a gang from Tangshan, Hebei Province, leading to three injured polices officers. The station has transferred the case to the anti-crime department for further investigation.

The publicity department of Ningcheng, Inner Mongolia confirmed with media on Friday that one of the county’s police station had been vandalized by a group of people from Tangshan in 2011.

The case has re-emerged into public view after a video showing a woman holding her ID card, claiming that a man surnamed Feng, president of a Tangshang iron and steel company, was responsible for the violence.

The Ningcheng police station previously denied the incident when questioned by reporters. In the latest response, the county’s publicity department said those who denied have no knowledge of what happened, and the case has been transferred to anti-crime department for follow up .

Feng’s company has been pressed charges on more than ten occasions. Feng himself and the company have also been listed for default for failing to fulfill their legal and financial troubles.

In the latest declaration of determination, Tangshan officials vowed on Friday to swiftly and severely deal with illegal cases once arising from public tip-offs.

Chinese police have caught 192 key fugitives of crimes against the control of the national border and frontier in an ongoing campaign since September 2021, the National Immigration Administration said Thursday.


The law enforcement operations also destroyed a number of smuggling gangs that were also involved in cross-border crimes such as gambling, fraud and drug trafficking.


In the next step, the administration will deploy a new round of operations against another 100 suspects who have been identified as leaders, organizers, transporters or key members of smuggling gangs.

(ECNS) -- More than 1,700 internet hospitals have been approved and established in China and integrated online and offline medical service has formed basically, according to National Health Commission.
Online medical services have developed fast in China since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with internet hospitals accumulating in number.
As of the end of 2021, online hospitals have served 298 million people, increasing by 83.08 million compared to 2020. Online hospital users have accounted for 28.9 percent of the total number of Chinese netizens.
At present, more than half of the second-level and above public hospitals in China have developed medical service pre-registration and among them, over 4,800 can provide prior-consultations, reducing cross-infection caused by gathering.
Meanwhile, remote medical services have covered all prefecture-level cities and more than 90 percent of counties (cities and regions), providing high-quality medical resources and improving the medical service capability at grassroot-level hospitals.
