It might be performing the same role as the MKK, but the radar and avionics are almost certainly far newer and better and would have also incorportated the airframe refinements that the J11B had over the Su27SK.

While it is not quite as big a step as moving from the F18D to F18F superbug, it is far closer to that than a mere carbon copy of the original MKK.

SAC has hardly got a spotless record, but even they aren't quite that useless.

The J-11B is a totally different jet from the Su-27 Flanker besides its airframe. Its got different systems. Its systems are also much newer. It is reported to have an AESA radar and a decreased RCS.

It is essentially the "Super Flanker" (besides the Su-35S).

The J11B, compared to the Su27, has all new radar, avionics, engines etc, but it still retains the basic airframe design despite many internal changes and refinements to increase airframe life, reduce weight and RCS etc. However, that still only consitutes as a major upgrade in my book, instead of a 'totally different jet'.

The J11BS is just a twin seat J11B, and as I stated before, While it is not quite as big a step as moving from the F18D to F18F superbug, it is far closer to that than a mere carbon copy of the original MKK.

Which I think is pretty much the same view you have, so why are we discussing this?

I think the J-16 is a fan given name, the program is simply a J-11BS with attack abilities.

Very interesting. I guess you might be right about ex-VARYAG staying in NSF (despite previous rumours that it would go to SSF). That would explain a lot of things. Thanks.

I think it has been obvious for some time that Varyag would stay in the NSF (at least for several years), that is where the base for her air wing has been constructed and its where she has been rebuilt so there is an existing support infrastructure. Sanya has clearly been built with large ships in mind but I dont think Varyag is one of them.

Yes, as I wrote, 01 in NSF would explain a lot of things. But it appears not to be a development that the Chinese bloggosphere has got wind of until now.

I am not sure that the new airfield at Huangdicun is one of them. Apparently it is subordinate to the PLANAF Training Base and will have an independent role, no matter where the carrier(s) will be based. But it will make a lot of sense to base 01's fighter regiment there.
