Role, perhaps. But it and the J-11B are essentially indigenous aircraft with systems (avionics, OBOGS, engines, RAM, etc) very different from any Russian Flanker.

i think bltizo isn't talking about the aircraft sub-system but he is refering to the aircraft role

Yes This is a new training field they have constructed to support the carrier project.

The entire project include the building of atleast 3 new "naval air stations" , plus 3 homeports renovation/upgrade/new build. most of them is finished.

all timeline indication points to Ex-Varyag homebased in north.
two new ones in south.

Very interesting. I guess you might be right about ex-VARYAG staying in NSF (despite previous rumours that it would go to SSF). That would explain a lot of things. Thanks.

wait wait wait...it's 2012 now and they just came up something equivalent to MKK that they got 12 years ago? Shenyang is really going backwards if this is true.

It might be performing the same role as the MKK, but the radar and avionics are almost certainly far newer and better and would have also incorportated the airframe refinements that the J11B had over the Su27SK.

While it is not quite as big a step as moving from the F18D to F18F superbug, it is far closer to that than a mere carbon copy of the original MKK.

SAC has hardly got a spotless record, but even they aren't quite that useless.
