That said I'm not too sure what the respective advantages and disadvantages of the two configurations of the front pod housing are, nor am I sure if the Sniper/Old YINGS-III design is particularly more vulnerable to wear.

Yep at least it's partially functional, could be a thing. The lens still move with a gimbal for the angled window. It's just that on an aircraft where the front landing gear is far enough in front like a flanker, you can even pepper it with gravel. On a J-10, it would be a lot less problematic with the landing gear beside the pod.

Makers of various pods actually don't hide the resolution of the sensors in their products.
Rafael litening claims theirs is 1024*1024
LM sniper claims theirs is double the resolution of late lantrin models.
Lantrin II had 512*512
Aselsan's aselpod tops out at 768*576.
Thales Damocles is allegedly (by defence industry daily claim) 640*480

Basically, resolution isn't really the key charateristic of the sensors in targeting pods. They're usually behind the standard of commercial products by a few generations when it comes to pure resolution. Of course, in other regards they are much more capable.

If you have crappy lenses... having higher resolution don't help out. Having very good lenses, capable of strong zooming make higher resoultion interesting but not necessary.

4K is actually pretty old standard and can be found on $400 dollars smart phone and DJI drones have 8K camera, today's TV has already reached 16K . Military standard is always higher than consumer electronics products. However, the detail is classified.

Lol... NO!

resolution is the last thing scientific and military camera builders think!! Sensitivity, reliability, and robustness are 100X more important than resolution. That is why you see monkey quality pictures from space probes etc..!
