Thank you for your kind replies. I do know the different background/insides of each of the flanker variants.

My problem is that every time I see a 2 seater flankers I can't tell imeediately if it's a SU27UBK or J11BS or SU30MKK or J16, whereas some members will say: 'yep, that's a J11BS no doubt.' :D

Maybe it comes with experience in watching them? Radome style/colours? Different wing-tips?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've read for example you can tell a USAF F15 from a F15E just from the paint scheme - one is monotone while the strike variant is always 2 tone?

Well, the J-16 is derived pretty much directly from the J-11BS, which itself is a Chinese build of the Su-27UBK, so physically they are all going to be very, very similar. Differences in engine nozzles, radomes, some specific antennae or sensors (ie. the location of the IR sensor on the nose), and ultimately unit markings for the various squadrons are probably going to account for most of the differences one could tell at a glance. For example, I believe the vertical rudders on the J-16 are a little differnt than the SU-27 or J-11.

And that just comes with familiarity.

As to the SU-30MMK, I believe there are some immediate differences. For example, its jamming pods are located on the wing tips. Etc.

And, as you say, the J-15S has the giveaway canards.

Well, this is off topic so we should not really belabor this here on the Flanker thread.

But, briefly, any US Air Force F-15 airsuperiority combat aircraft will be a single seat fighter, whereas the F-15E combat strike aircraft is a two seater.

The problem comes in telling the difference between the F-15B/D two seat trainers and the F-15E, two-seat strike aircraft.

Two ways.

One is definitely be the darker camo painting on the F-15E.

The other is the conformal fuel tanks along the outside of the engine intakes. The F-15E has them, the F-15B/D do not.

Pylons (especially wing tip ones), exhausts (WS-10 vs AL-31) and in flight refueling probe (if you can see it from the port). These are the main visual differences.

Don't feel too bad, AFB doesn't know the difference either, and frankly don't care to much, the real reason I coined the phrase, "a Flanker is a Flanker, is a Flanker".

J-16, IFR + engine + landing gear + colour of nose. These are the things you can use to differentiate from J-11BS and Su-30.

Exactly. They are all beautiful.

You've hit the nail on the head again Master Delft, and Flankers are pretty,,,,, I loved the F-15 to the very bottom of my soul, I sat for an hour and watched the Red, White, and Blue McDonnald Douglas Factory Demo shoot landings at Scott AFB, gear down, flaps down, pop the speed brake, roll it on, hit the burners, lift off, cool the burners and stay at pattern altitude, never a bobble, never a jiggle, just like it was on rails, over and over and over and over, and then the F-18, and I just loved the old Northrup XP-530, but the 15 was the queen, then came the Mig-29, just a gorgeous airplane, but well and then the Su-27, woo hooo! yah, and then the Air-shows, I was smitten and still am, in fact the T-50 has to go as the sexiest airplane ever, will it fly as good as its big sisters, I don't know, those small verts are a slight concern, but it is still a Flanker, and boy does she look gorgeous!!! Yes there is just something about a Sukhoi.....
