Yes, the zumwalt class was canceled which forced the reduction of ammo to 1 million a piece. US procurement is always $$$$. But the PLAN may have a real mission for a few ships since they have interest in Taiwan and SCS. Also 2 carriers and a number of destroyers/frigates are not strike oriented.

I've seen images taken by the Japanese ministry of defense, of various Chinese ships (and planes) sailing/flying close to Japan many times, shared on this website. I'm pretty sure Chinese ships are photographed whenever they pass through the first island chain on Japan's area in the westpac, whenever they pass into westpac, by virtue of the inherent maritime geography.

055 probably hasn't been asked to deploy particularly far from China's own waters yet.
But give it a 3-4 years, I imagine 8 of them will be in service by then, which should be enough ships and mature enough for the PLAN to deploy them as part of routine operations more normally..

Maybe not what you are looking for since I have nothing overly accurate but a couple months ago I decided to use measurement software to determine the crosssection of the UVLS. I fitted all distances relative to the length of the Type 055. Considering that i didn't have the photograph in high resolution I would take the figures with an uncertainity in the low feet region and I probably overestimated the lengths of the VLS. But still these figures probably represent an upper bound to what you are looking for. What you can take for granted is that the front 055 VLS section has an area of about the Burkes entire VLS farm. All scales are in feet so you need to multiply x12 inches each.

For bow box mount (4x2 units),
Its 12.9m x 9.6m /43 x 32 ft.
For aft box mount (3x2 units),
Its 9.6m x 9.6m / 32 x 32 ft.

For 052d configuration with 2x2 units,
Its 6.6m x 9.6m / 22 x 32 ft.
