If I am wrong correct me but I thought the Type designation was dropped for Lianoning and Shandong so that they are currently just the 001 carrier and the 002 carrier?

"16" and "17" have been painted on the actual carriers of "Liaoning" and "Shangdong", respectively. So the official designation should be CV-16 and CV-17.

You’re both correct. In the launch ceremonies of both Liaoning and Shandong they definitely called them “Carrier 001” and “Carrier 002”. So Liaoning is Carrier 001 and CV-16. Shandong on the other hand is Carrier 02 and CV-17. But one thing for sure, PLAN has never called either carriers “Type-XXX”.

whilst Liaoning painted '16' on its island, why Shandong does not have '17' on its island?

You are wrong: CV 16 was called "Type 001" 1348571525_79953[1].jpg
