I really like the idea of the "DDH". Of course it is a total fiction that the ship is a destroyer but it fills a role that the JMSDF needs filled excellently. It gives vastly improved ASW capability that you can take with you, limited amphibious power projection, and a flagship to organize the fleet around. Also it is forwards compatible with the F-35. I mean it may not actually operate them but if you need to the can carry them.

Overall I'd say that the ship advances the JMSDF to the next level.

Thanks Jeff...Nice job all in all:)
Popeye and Obi Wan and all, here's a look at the 16DDH outfitted for the Sea Control role. I believe they will be capable of this if the JMSDF desires.

Great Job Jeff. Was the launch point for the JSF a guess or just for illistration? thanks

6 JSF with 12 SH-60 and Merlins would be about right...Very nice job Jeff..Very nice indeed...:)

Jeff, is the DDH in your latest version ment to have a cat? (It looks like it does)
Would porbably add some complexity, though it might be needed to operate F-35s
The Tarawas are 250m long and can operate Harriers in the STO-mode without cats. From a video I've seen I would think that the Harriers actually use perhaps 200-220m of the deck to take off. So getting F-35Bs of a DDH without a cat might come at the price of a really low payload.
Still a cat on a ship that small ..., even the Melbourne was 15m longer. It's a perhaps bit too small size for a fixed wing aviation ship.
Many Helos could do a great job with it, of perhaps UAVs.

Nope...no cat there. That's just an illustration of a STO option. Probably would extend a little further aft.

Just an illustration popey. What might happen. As I indicated to scratch, the roll would probably start a little further aft.

In addition, it is clear that a whole lot more capability will be available to the 16DDH than what is being advertised. Look at these pics of the HMS Ocean. She's just a slight bit heavier than the 16DDH, but look at all that activity on deck. A lot more than just four helos.

Great Job - really great Job, I agree

Jeff
if you made your ship a little bit longer, construct a angeld deck and add one or two cats in front (one in front of the angled deck) you'll have the "amphibious carrier" - also to be used by light weight ground attack planes, I dream in my old days .... :china:

When the Invincibles were built they were quoted as being able to carry just five Sea Harriers and nine Sea Kings. Without being greatly enlarged they have proved capable of carrying a lot more. The stated number of four helos is about as realistic as the DDH designation, I suspect it's all to do with getting light carriers past the Japanese politicians, who as I stated previously may be against the idea of carriers but haven't the faintest idea what one looks like! That's how the Invincibles were sneaked past the British government which thought they were buying 'Through Deck Cruisers' on a par with the French Jeanne d'Arc or the Italian Veneto (as well as the fact that they were only shown side views of the design, which explains the long superstructure/twin funnel layout to a degree). Tell the pollies what they want to hear and you can build what you like, well almost.

Agreed...I have now established an official page for the 16DDH on my wolrdwideaircraftcarriers.com site. On that page, I basically make the same points that you just made.

I get quite a few questions regarding why I haven't included the new QE class or the new French carrier. Well, I put new carriers on there once they are under construction, even first steel cut. I take them off as they are decommissioned...for example, I have mow removed the USN JFK.

Add a couple of hundred tons of steel to the bows and now tell me it's a 'Destroyer'...
...and essentially, you then have the Italian Cavour:

...or ther Spanis BPE:

It's more than coincidence that they are so similar in appearance. They will also be just as similar in capability and function.
