Not sure if already discussed, but looks like the 2 tankers weren't refuel capable, so no daisy-chain theory, raises the likelihood of either direct or indirect combat damage....However, even if the Iraqis shot it down, how would they know there were 6 on board? That isn't the standard crew, right, and surely the chaos of the blast would've made body recovery quite difficult (given only 4 have been found so far).

USCentcom, who had earlier today said that only four of the six had died, again made clear that the crash was not caused by hostile fire or friendly fire.
The identities of the members who died are being withheld their families can be notified, USCentcom said.
This plane was Ithe fourth US aircraft lost since the US and began launching strikes against Iran on 28 February. Three US air force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down in a friendly fire incident by Kuwait air defences earlier this month. All crew members in those jets ejected safely.
Seven US troops have been killed in the conflict, while as many as 150 US troops have been wounded. The death toll in is more than 1,300, according to the country’s UN ambassador.
Both Donald Trump and the US defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, have warned that the Iran war would probably claim more American lives before the conflict ends.

Oh I am very familar with aircraft dynamics from what I do for a living.
Cruise power is typically 75%, losing one out of 4 engines gives the equivilent of an instaneous loss of 25% thrust (equivilent to the following aircraft instaneously increasing throttle to 93%) its actually the fastest way for the two aircraft to close in on each other compared to waiting for turbine spooling.
KC135 length is 43m, cruise speed is around 260 m/s, a drop in speed of just 10% will cause a 26 m/s speed delta between two aircraft in formation giving only 3 second of reaction time after factoring in decel rate before the two are right above/below the other
Compare this to the probability of a pilot with plenty of sleep slaming throttle then hold altitude for thr 10+ seconds for no reason.
And no the wing wont come off from a engine nacel strike from behind, engines pylons are designed to sheer off and this has happened before.
But loss of speed will cause a drop in altitude which does not help with avoiding collection with another aircraft behind and below you.
Oh and keep in mind the tanker would be flying on autopilot the entire time, while the receiver most of the time would also be.
If it was the nose that had damage then it would be a collision, but tip of vert stab is an extremly difficult place to make come in contact with another plane, I dont think you're full grasping just how low the probability of this is without any unplaned external disturbance.
