Iran's best bet right now is to forgo responding militarily, save perhaps for some symbolic strikes.

Its long-held grand strategy has been comprehensively defeated and Tehran should now cut its losses and pivot toward denuclearization and normalization with the U.S.

The Islamic Republic never had the means to pursue its lofty regional ambitions, something that is now obvious for all to see.
why do you think that a surrender will be (truly) accepted at all?

Did Gaddafi's "pivot toward denuclearization and normalization with the U.S." result in Libya becoming a great power or a shithole?

I don't really see how Iran can respond here? Unless they have been holding back their strike capabilities incase of US intervention, they simply don't have a legitimate path of escalation. The US can out escalate them at will and clearly can strike them at will.

I'd like to add that I think this should have been obvious with the assassination of Qasem Soleimani. The US took out a top Iranian official and payed almost no price for doing so. At the time, we thought that it was prudent for deescalation, but I think the reality was Iran just couldn't respond in a convincing way.

Iran could target US bases in middle east, which the US has alot

Iran decided to cut its losses with Soleimani, Hamas, Hezbollah and timidness lead its enemies to become confident enough to strike.

They followed your advice, and looked what happened.

When the United States claims that you have nuclear bombs, you'd better really have them.

It means that idiots in the government like Khamenei have to be deposed and more focused leaders must take their place - nothing would have happened if Iran actually had a nuclear bomb or if at least their intelligence services were functional. Denuclearization means that Iran will be chopped up by Israel and the US.

The attack signals to everyone that nuclear weapons are a must, not that they should denuclearize. Actually, that lesson was evident from Libya, but I guess Iranian leadership is not good at learning on mistakes of others.

Iran has been defeated, but its problems are not over yet. In real life there's no referee to stop your opponent from kicking you when you're down. Once you lose your leverage, you don't even have surrender to negotiate.

Asian countries like China, India, Pakistan and North Korea were willing to eat grass to have a weapon and just sprinted towards the goal with no hesitation. Every one was under sanctions until the west gave up. It really does take that kind of national willpower. The reason was precisely that if they did not sprint towards a weapon, this sort of shit will happen.

It is use it or lose it. Once you start, you can't stop or go back. Not obeying that fundamental principle is what got Iran to this.
