This guy.... missed his last 2 snatches, total bullcrap. He's normally a very consistent lifter with a snatch right up to the world record. Luckily, he's a monster in the clean and jerk too so he made it up. 2 things about him:

1. Chen is known as the stupid guy in Chinese weightlifting. When the talent scout went to his elementary school and asked all the kids to do as many pushups as they can, Chen did 50... They asked him why he stopped and he said because he was bored, not tired. Then he did a stationary leap of over 2 meters. The guys asked his teacher how he's doing in grades and they said absolutely fucking terrible. So they talked to his parents and nabbed him. Currently, as an adult, he's still stupid. Coach Yujie has said, "Chen is a very hard worker and trains diligently once he understands... but his mind is very simple and you have to tell him many times before he understands."

2. Chen is so stupid that he forfeited his gold in Rio because he was LATE. Yeah... unheard of, eh. He lost track of time sitting in his hotel and suddenly realized he had 20 minutes to get to his competition. He got out and sprinted for 20 minutes to get there and although he was in time, he had overexerted and suffered cramps in his arms and legs causing him to bomb. What a gift to the 33 Colombian lifter who took Chen's gold; the old soldier was in tears and never expected to see an Olympic gold in his life.

This is some absolutely hilarious shit

I already explained before; those are far more universal sports and are more competitive as a result. Even with lax quotas and such, no country can truly dominate.

Fat people are strong, very strong. Look at powerlifting and strongman; sexy jacked people can't compete. It's all fat dudes with no necks. Due to differences in muscle type/composition and other genetics, you can have very strong people coming from body types you wouldn't expect but the universal advantage is to be big boned.

Interesting thing that modern science has not figured out:
By logic, a very fat superheavyweight lifter should be able to lift more if he loses fat. Fat has no known ability to pull weight, but it is dead weight on his body. If a 160kg lifter loses 20kg belly fat, he should be able to squat 20kg more. However, in real life, making him lose 20 kg fat will cause an enormous drop in his strength. One theory is that the fat aroung his ass and thighs allows him to bounce better, however, this has been debunked because fat has no elasticity. I have seen this in person; my friend weighs 265 pounds and is lean and muscular. He squats 365 pounds, however, he told me that in high school, he was also 265 pounds, but chubby. In high school, he could squat 550 pounds. He lost fat and built muscle to look good but it made him weaker. Neither he, I, nor modern scientists understand why.

Sure, no problem. Calorie deficit training, but he will lose his strength and leave the sport... then there are people who are just truly too fat (Behdad Salimi 170kg) and can probably look fine with intensive fat loss training but might die from overexertion and malnutrition before he looks shredded.

wow bro, you are a treasure of information for weightlifting. I heard of talk about poor nations excel in weightlifting because of harsh training and injuries to the body so athletes from richer developed nation avoid this sport. Is there some truth to this or just total bullcrap? And why do Asians do so well in this discipline?

Weightlifting is one of the most counter-intuitive sports there is. The natural instinct is to get out of the way when there is a heavy moving weight but weightlifters throw that weight onto themselves and resist the instinct to leave any room for escape. Hesitation kills every lift. In addition, these counter-intuitive movements are very technical and need to be ground into the brain and muscle memory until they become second instinct. That is the type of full commitment and skill needed to be a successful weightlifter. The best way to reshape instinct is to train early, as a small child. Countries with state-sponsored programs that hunt down talent from a very young age are most successful at weightlifting. Countries that wait for kids who show preference usually end up training kids from the mid-late teens as young kids before age 10 don't typically take to weightlifting for obvious reasons. This is too late to unlock their full potential.

The best example of this is North vs South Korea. North Korea's program is similar to China's in recruitment although their training is far more primitive. South Korea's recruitment is more similar to the USA in that they wait for people to like weightlifting by themselves before training them. Even though South Korea is more advanced in exercise science, that is unable to make up the difference. In competition, South Korea is an insect compared to its northern neighbor despite their genetics being identical.

China is a dichotomy, with rich and poor regions. All of China's successful weightlifters come from poor villages and were trained from elementary school age. As China's poverty alleviation becomes more and more successful, the poor rural population is likely to drop and Chinese weightlifting talent may very well suffer for it.
And why do Asians do so well in this discipline?
Asians tend to have higher fast twitch muscle composition making Asians more explosive in power, which is what counts for weightlifting. Su Bingtian, the dash sprinter, was the only non-black person to make it to the final 8 in the 100 meter dash in Rio. For the first 30 meters, his explosive power off the line caused him to lead everyone including Usain Bolt before he was taken over.

Western media and swimming powerhouse countries mainly US and Aus been after china swimming forever. Ever since their disgraceful treatment of Ye Shiwen, I have a hatred of their guilty until proven innocent attitude. Sun yang case was inevitable, tbh he had a temper amd they made use of this to ruin him.
I will never forgive the people who treated Ye Shiwen poorly. They are my personal enemies.

(I swam competitively until I was 14. This is kinda personal for me)

Yeah, people with well sculpted bodies tend not to do well in power events because they lack the strength at the body core to effectively be "strong" in this manner. Hence, visually, why most power event contestants are as you described - once you start packing muscles in that area, you no longer have that visually pleasing Vee shape and six packs.

Height or lack of is an advantage here too no?

By the way, thank you very much for your commentary. It breaths life and colour into what would otherwise be just a sport and a medal statistic to most of us.

Wow thanks that's really informative. Learned alot about the sports, the talent recruitment and genetics involved. Yeah I noticed about the north Korean and south Korean difference. I follow abit of gymnastics and diving too and see abit about it in those two disciplines. North Korean athletes more prominent than their southern counterpart.

Surprised about Asians having having higher fast twitch muscle fiber than blacks. I always thought blocks have the highest composition of it. Hence they dominate sprinting events, nba etc.

Should look at height charts of different countries if you want to stereotype (East) Asians as short. Plenty of other ethnicities have short people and they don't dominate Olympic weightlifting like China does.

I hope you didn't have to put with alot of racist
BS during your competitions. Or discouragment.

And Yeah it was really bad at 2008. All sorts of insinuations and outright accusations. Swimming sites like swimswam etc filled with hate filled comments. Media openly asking questions. When Ye's case died down they moved on to Sun.

I hate hearing aussie commentatary but I have no choice since I can't get cctv stream to work. Case in point the race today, they shaded the Chinese swimmers and hyped up the aussie and American swimmer and rivalry like it's some kind of once in a century fight. Truly nauseating. Wanted to puke.

I hope you didn't have to put with alot of racist

Not to mention the disgraceful comments during opening ceremony
