Arihant look like close Delta SSBN mainly sail, Jin/094 also, is actually the SSBN the less armed except Arihant but it is not in service with 12 SLBM as the Delta I and noisy as Delta class.

A SSBN of medium quality need for doing deterence patrol remains close coast in Bastions with escort as Soviet doing in Barents Sea and Okhotsk Sea bastions.
In South China Sea close Hainan and eventually in Bohai Sea yet launch tests and also built there

Mr tidalware nice graphic but really i don't think 30 SSN too much :)

The Indian SSBN ( has it even got its nuclear reactor installed yet?) .
Yes, of course.

It has been to sea several times and is not about to be commissioned and become active.

It is, however, a lot less capable that the Chinese Type 094 SSBNs...by far.

Far fewer missiles and far shorter range.

But it is a start for the Indians and they hope that the next two will have the longer range missiles.

But let's get back on topic to the Chinese SSBNs.

A more appropriate comparison would be to Type 092, China's first generation SSBN, with 12 x JL-1 SLBMs with a range of about 2,000 km. Type 092 had been a long and torturous development process for China. So it would not be surprising that India, too, starts their first SSBN with modest capabilities.

I thought the Indian first generation Arihant looks pretty good. It doesn't have a hump and tiny holes on the sides which has more smoother lines than than China 2-nd generation 094.

India got alot of help from Russia in its design and learned alot from usage of Akula

I think China needs to improve the 094 design and it can't have those outdated hump anymore.
Maybe China can buy a few Akula subs or even Yasen. I think it can help.

I am always wondering what is actually the purpose of tiny holes on the side of Type 094 ? ... my apologies if this is a lame question :)

btw Arihant is only 50% the size of Type 094 .... so no comparison

An 093B on sea trials, when compared to the original 093, the B-variant definitely has some differences, especially the conning tower and the bump that houses the potential VLS.

Can't wait for clearer pictures of this beastie. But the outline certainly looks promising.

However, given that I suspect the primary reason for the loudness of Chinese SSN/SSBNs are down to the reactors, unless they are trialling new gen reactors on these boats, I would not expect a massive decrease in noise level compared to 093.

If they did use a new reactor design, I think it would warrant a new class designation.
