Russia’s 5th-gen Su-57 fighter jet crashes during factory trials, pilot ejects

One of Russia’s cutting-edge Su-57 fighter jets has crashed during routine factory test flights near the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft plant in the Far East. The pilot ejected safely and was picked up by a Mi-8 rescue helicopter.
The aircraft involved in the incident belonged to the manufacturer and was undergoing a series of flight tests some 110 kilometers of Dzyomgi air base in Russia's Khabarovsk region.

There were no casualties or damage on the ground, the manufacturer confirmed in a brief statement. The crashed jet's black boxes are yet to be recovered.

Reports suggest it was a serial production unit. No details on engine though.

I don't think we really know which aircraft, the only thing stated is that it belonged to the factory test fleet?? so it could have been any of them, even the early pre production birds??

I initially assumed it was a prototype testing the new engines but some links I read on the Russian forum suggest it was a production bird. Could be wrong or I could have misread.

In any case I disagree with the sentiments that this somehow reveals inherent design flaws with the Su-57. Assuming the prototypes were all tested to extremes already, they would have a proven design. This is in opposition to F-16 forum and Drive Warzone troll suggestions. The cause of the issue may have been in manufacturing and an isolated case. Thankfully the man came out alive.

Doubt it'll damage the exportability either. F-16s to F-35s have had mishaps too. Same with Flankers and Fulcrums, Typhoons, and Gripens. They're all export successes. So don't follow the line of thinking there either. It shouldn't take the Russians that long to fix any inherent issues if they exist. But obviously with the budget stranglehold on Russian MIC, it won't be a fast paced delivery of all the units ordered by RuAF.

If it was the jet undergoing factory trials, was it the first 'serial' production bird?

and it seems they talk the same aircraft, based on what I read elsewhere which is

Yes, its one of the pre-production prototypes, hopefully not 055, as she is one of my favorites, with a civilian test pilot according to Fox News, Russia....

As noted the first production aircraft is scheduled to deliver today, this will put a damper on the ceremonies, in fact the factory bird was likely going to be doing a formation fly by with the first production aircraft would be my best guess? but that's just me putting the pieces together??? so we shall see what the circumstances were, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that bird was to be part of today's festivities.....

Reuters says the lost bird was a production aircraft, not a prototype:

The lost plane was one of the first to be mass-produced and was due to be handed over to the Russian air force by the end of this year, the Interfax news agency reported, citing a source.
