The Jin-class is about 35 feet longer than the Xia-class SSBN, "primarily due to an extended mid-section of approximately 115 feet (35 meters) that houses the missile launch tubes and part of the reactor compartment," according to the report.

Re: Chinese sub thread

Since the two photos used in comparing were taken in 2005 and 2006, very short time apart, we can exclude the possibility that the new sub is modifed from the old one.

I personally think the Jin's photo is after PS processed, so it doesn't show hatches, not because of low resolution.

I have some serious doubts about this. China is very secretive about its submarines... most of all the SSBN!

What are the chances of them just leaving it out in the open in a known submarine port facility?

And Google Earth images can be up to several years old. I noticed that the area around my home hasn't changed in 3 years.

So if the Type 094 was left out in the open, it would have been left out in the open back a few years ago, while it was still in development! Highly unlikely, that's for sure. :coffee:

Chances are, China built a modified Xia in between the original and the real Jin-class as a testing bed. This is the sub that is sometimes seen and is mistaken for the real Jin-class.

I agree with Roger604 in this. I remember reading, perhaps in this forum, That the PLAN had built speical pens for their subs in caves or something like this. This placement of this "sub" may just be a ruse by the PLAN.

Folks have found that it's the same location shown in the photo, the hill was digged hollow in 1960/1970 already as the nuke sub base.

This photo poped up before Aug 1 of last year(PLA day), it was treated as PS before. Now it looks like to have some amazing details.

Re: Chinese sub thread

The Google Earth maps in my city show a construction site where the construction was completed by 2003. So the Google Earth maps (at least in my city) are at least 4 years old.

I wonder how old the maps in China are? If they're pre-2003, it's high unlikely China would leave their most secret strategic asset, still in development, out in the open.

@Fishhead

KANWA reported last year on an underground submarine base around Hainan Island on the southern tip of the China. They reported that this base was to be used for the new nuclear subs.

Perhaps this old underground sub base you are referring to (built in the 60's to 70's) is the one used as a home base for the Xia-class.

That would make a lot of sense, since the JL-1 has a range of only 2,000 km. The only portion of Soviet Union it can target, without sailing around the world to Europe, is the Russian Far East. The best place to target the Russian Far East is around the Bohai Sea... which is exactly where this old submarine base is.

Re: Chinese sub thread

Chinese sites tend to overwhelemly agree that the sub is a 092 mod, not 094.

If that's true, it means that not just one hull of 092 are in service, different 092 mod photos are widely seen, but people tends to think it's the one signle 092 goint into different stage of mod.

I stopped using the program a year ago, but most of the developed aresa and cities in China seem to be constantly updated. Most of the pre-2003 photos are extremely blotted and low-res and making out details such as a sub would be impossible. So I say these pics are genuine.

Its no secret that theres is at least one 94 out there with at least one 93 (likely more by now), its just that a lack of credible photos makes the subject matter hazy.
