I'm trying to remember when I read a post on the Chinese boards that said there was going to be 4 new J-20s by the end of the year. I think it was sometime before summer.

I believe that the first batch might enter service in 2015.

So do I. Rumor has always been that the first batch to enter service will be between late 2015 and early 2016 anyway.

So, I guess what we are more concerned now is or should be: When are we going to see some definitive progress on WS-15?

Wow, so they really skipped 2014, I am disappointed by this superstitious nonsense. I've read in a Chinese post that there was no 1014 for J-10 either, was this true?

2014 could conceivably be the static test bed.

And I am far more impressed at the fact that a new prototype has flown less than a month after the prior one, than "disappointed" at seemingly adhering to a small cultural quirk

As wtlh said in an earlier post, the appearance of 2015, assuming it's not PSed, does not preclude the existence of 2014. JF-17, also a Chengdu project, did in fact have a prototype numbered '04'.

2015 may not be in Chengdu, so it's possible that 2014 is somewhere undisclosed as well.

From the fact that 2015 appeared less than a month after 2013 suggest that a ( small ) batch is being produced. The aircraft will be fitted after they are produced with whatever is necessary for the tests an aircraft will be used to do. It might be that 2014 needs much more time for these preparations than 2015.
