Who else besides China and India uses AL-series engines in a large scale? Of course, besides the Easter bloc nations.

I thought those former East Bloc counties had replaced all aircraft with AL-31 engines, and others, with US aircraft as an insurance premium and a boon for US companies.

Actually only the Ukraine and Belarus ever operated the Su-27 in Eastern Europe. At the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union it was only the Soviet Union that operated the type, it had not been exported to the other Warsaw pact countries. Since then the series has been acquired by the following:

Algeria
Angola
China
Eritrea
Ethiopia
India
Indonesia
Malaysia
United States (2 acquired for aggressor training)
Venezuela
Vietnam

These are in addition to the Soviet successor states that inherited aircraft from the Soviet Union:

Belarus
Kazakhstan
Russia
Ukraine
Uzbekistan

I believe China was the first country to get the Su-27, which was the top Russian fighter at the time. The fact that the Russians exported their best fighters to China surprised a lot of people.

and they weren't down graded version either.
the best Russians had in service at the time.

which speaks in volume of the desperate situation china and russia faced at that time.

PLA pilots were basically still flying J-8s going up against JSADF and USAF eagles.

ouch.

btw J10B is testing WS10A, and also flying on AL31? does this mean the rear end of the J10B is designed to fit 2 different engines?

The J10 was originally designed to fly with the WS10, and was only modified to fly with the AL31 when that became available and the WS10 programme suffered delays and set-backs.

Personally, I don't think CAC ever really gave up on the idea of using WS10/WS10As, so there is a good chance that they designed and the built the J10s to be able to take either without needing massive modifications.

This is, imo, where the 'modular' approach to the JF17 first originated. I remember there was a lot of raised eyebrows and disbelief when it was claimed that the JF17 was designed to be able to change powerplants easily depending on the needs of the customer. Not such a giant leap if the concept had already been tried out on the J10. Given how quickly the JF17 was developed, it is quite likely that it use a lot of the technologies, concepts and lessons learnt from the J10.
