This story is worth watching. For the moment, it is hard for me to believe Chinese gov would outright link Tesla Shanghai to Musk's other ventures, as Musk has been on good terms with Chinese gov. I would rather want to know how Tesla plans to digest the existing capacity in 2023. I could see feasibility if Model 3 was lowered another notch or two or Model 2 was introduced.
No, that's a stupid Bloomberg speculation. They are delaying expansion here due to lack of demand. They can barely sell the production they have now. And they are going to do another expansion in Q2 which will raise production at Shanghai giga to 1.5 million a year. How are they going to sell even that many?

I pointed this out here, BYD PR is horrendous. They finally learnt to use news wire for this very important news of unveiling Seal to India market and for promoting themselves in the Indian market. There are so many more English article just about BYD in India than anywhere else. Like, their PR is shameful.

Thankfully, our friends at Snow Bull Capital are moving to Shenzhen soon and going to be doing PR/IR there.

aside from that, BYD is really pushing it out in India

more info on BYD Tang OTA. sounds like huge improvements in smart car functionality. These are also things listed in the Denza D9 OTA. Major advantage over legacy JVs.
Although, I've personally had several major Tesla OTAs and my auto driving functionalities never got better.

Some of these other countries like Indonesia, India, Mexico, Canada and even Korea are trying to steal tesla factories from China. But the best thing for shanghai and some other provinces to do is to subsidize a big factory for Nio, rather than some foreign brands. With big factories Nio can then easily take sales from Japanese brands local and abroad.

BYD going into Japan. The Atto 3 currently have 3 month wait time, first delivery in 2 weeks and produced at Changzhou and Changsha and shipped from Shanghai.
20+ stores in Japan.
have 70% market share in electric bus now.
sold 400+ electric fork lift since 2015.
Japan should be thankful that BYD is introducing them to the EVs rather than being held captive by the fossil fuel zaibatsu.

battery-powered locomotive manufactured by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Dalian Co. Ltd was launched in Bangkok on Wednesday to aid Thailand's efforts to improve its railway service while cutting carbon emissions..
I don't see the advantage of this over a fully electrified line. For carrying capacity, battery is just too heavy with too low energy density relative to fossil or full electric on grid.

Tesla Shanghai was not about subsidies. Rather it was a two-way gamble. Shanghai Municipal Gov traded free land and 100% ownership for guaranteed tax receipts and localization thresholds, which is fully kicking in from 2023 and beyond. That gamble has worked great to both sides now. To China EV industry, Tesla Shanghai was a much needed cat fish. Before that, a few startups scammed local governments for huge subsidies. Remember Byton? NIO almost fell into the Byton category if it was not for Anhui government bail out.

For various factors, Tesla Shanghai turns out to be among smartest foreign investment China has attracted since opening up. The fact of matter is that Tesla can check out anytime but it can never leave Shanghai. One result is that China EV supply chain and eco-system has reached to a point of no return regardless of what US/EU might do. With BYD and Tesla leading the way, China is in the pole position of the global EV transition no matter what. And that was unthinkable even 5 years ago.

NIO, Xpeng and Li Auto are more Wall Street trading projects than Chinese EV hopes. I don't think any of three would be independent car company by the end of this decade.

Well, the thing is, Chinese industry only survived and thrived with the introduction of Tesla, because you had a strong industrial base to make the batteries and electric engines in China already. I still remember years ago a program showing how China had developed automated machines to wind the coils of electric engines, while Tesla was still doing this by hand for the Roadster. You also had companies like BYD already in the segment. China had high risk with these foreign investments in factories ending up like some did in Hong Kong. Not many people remember now, but Hong Kong used to have a quite large electronics manufacturing sector. They assembled computers and made chips. But it was all foreign capital, and when those companies moved for places with cheaper labor it evaporated.
