TVC is a must for swept wing 5th gen jet in order to sustain super-cruise and super-maneuverability. For J20, i doubt's a necessities.

I would rather take it with a grain of salt. Why does PLARF keep J-20 in reserve meanwhile 5th gen fighter is in high demand both in training and patrolling.

I am not trying to be pessimistic here, but do we have hard evidence that CB0XYZ exactly means? X is batch number for sure however the last two digits can mean XXth within the same batch or XXth in total production. I am looking for counter evidence against the latter one. For example, are there any photos indicating a production number like CB0101 or CB0310 to confirm the last two digits are counted independently between batches?

If we could confirm it, the total units would be at least 18 + 40 + 56 + 70 = 184.

It seems my alternative theory is probably real. Those number are not counted independently between batches but the total number ever manufactured.

But here is one more thing, the total number of J-20 has still surpassed that of F-22 by the end of 2022. And there were more than 7 batches at the very least with 156 in total procurement. My own take is somewhere between 190 and 200.

Could each batch simply be 20 planes starting with batch 00 or do we have any numbers that would disprove that ?

It is one possibility derived from educated guess I would say.

More importantly, PLA never release photo once taken but delayed them for at least several months even several years. So I have absolutely no idea when the 156th J-20 was delivered.
