New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Tesla Model 2 is long overdue. Not to mention a new Roadster and Model S.
Totally. In contrast, BYD has been on a tear progressing from the Dynasty series to the Ocean series. If I extrapolate my experience in EMS industry, I think it is the supply chain and the engineering talents inside the US or even Germany that are the primary obstacles, which directly impact on all critical factors of time-to-market, total cost and quality. Tesla has to learn the lesson of Foxconn vis-a-vis Flextronics. Otherwise, it would not be able to build any profitable family cars in the ranks of Camry/Accord and Corolla/Civic. BYD already has full lineup for mass markets.

Tesla is in a bind. It has to compete against BBA and Lexus with its current lineup. It needs a separate brand to compete against Toyota and VW. Model 2 would be in the mass market category. Tesla could accomplish that by producing most of its EV products in China and export to the world markets, but politics won't allow it to happen. With high cost production bases in Fremont, Austin and Berlin, I see Tesla is repeating the mistake that doomed Flextronics. I don't think Tesla can even produce 10 million cars per year without China producing over 75% of them. It might be able to produce near 20 million cars if it moved all-in in China.

Production isn't really the issue, as Tesla just don't have enough models to support even 10 million cars per year.
People want choice in terms of the size and style of the car. Then there's individual taste to consider.

Tesla can get away with having only a few models whilst the competition is weak, but that won't be the case in the future.

I get a figure of at least 26 different models of pure-electric car or pickup truck. But how many can tesla launch in the next 5 years?

In terms of cars:

For an entry-level car brand, here is what I think they need:

Size-wise: Micro, Mini, Small, Medium, Large, X-Large
From Small upwards, these can come in Sedan or SUV versions
Then the Large and X-Large could come in MPV versions

That's 12 different models already for an entry-level brand

For the premium car brand, my guess is that 10 vehicles would be need, as Micro and Mini size cars don't really work as a premium car.

Then in terms of pickup trucks, it would need 4 sizes: Small, Medium, Large, X-Large

I love this kind of trolling from Chinese social media. U8's drivetain is so much superior despite being like 1/17th of T90's weight.

I think if PLA asked BYD, it would be able to develop the most mobile/efficient IFV or AAV imaginable with hybrid drive train.

Interesting since this contradicts the news that because Tesla is cutting prices in China, that's what keeping it ahead of the rest in China who have no room to cut prices. It's like how in the US, Tesla I've read has the best maintenance record of all cars driving in the US but I always come across stories how the build quality in Teslas are bad.

If the U8 had the same weight as the T-90 its range would drop like a rock. It is simple physics.

Protests in front of Tesla stores by Tesla owners after Tesla decided to massively slash the prices of the Tesla EV cars, calling for Tesla to "return" the "overcharged" money which they paid for their own Teslas before the price slash.

Fvcking hilarious.

Tesla is doomed. Once the protests start, that's it. Any negative reaction - and we all know Tesla will have one - will enrage the consumers even more.
