But the narrative falls apart when China does an immense unprecedented exercise surround all of Taiwan island, and US navy just sits there doing nothing. A meaningless symbolic visit after all.
They can spin it as "USN has already deterred China, they have the freedom to conduct safe military exercises in international waters under US supervision". It is still a loss.

Japan and Germany did the same mistake. It's a recurring theme of totalitarianism
Imperial Japan thought Americans were weak with their Hollywood and hedonism. And Japan arguably had the best equipment and best trained naval pilots during WWII, certainly better than America during the initial stages of the war.

America’s strength lies in its vast resources. It has the best piece of real estate on the planet with only 350 million people. The Native Americans took good care of this land. People here get to live in 3000 - 4000 sqf houses, drive 2-3 cars per family. You don't see that in Europe or anywhere else.

For years I wondered if CN had a clear strategy about TW. I'm still skeptical they have one.

It's Chairman Mao.

Mao said he could wait 100 years for Taiwan, this is after making the deal with the Americans.

Mao was saying China can wait indefinitely, but not forever.

After this Pelosi visit, which kind of shows how important it was, we still clearly in the indefinitely mode.

If there is a change to an attitude of not waiting forever, then the war will start relatively soon.

On one hand, I am very relieved that this hasn't burned out into a war between China and the US. On the other hand, this response couldn't help but feel anemic. I mean sure, China could sanction Pelosi's entire family and perhaps even Taiwan, but that seems like a very light response to this very serious attempt by a high-ranking US official to try to further legitimize Taiwan whilst also stirring up discontentment at home. I can't really understand what the intentions of the PRC and Xi is in this scenario though, especially since they surely must know that a not insignificant part of the Chinese population are calling for blood over this.

Unless China does something really serious and drastic in the coming days, like denouncing their no-first-use policy or publicly orders the doubling of their military expenditure, I don't see how well this will play well to the domestic public or to international policy makers.

Not exactly. The military exercises, for all we know, can just be a way to placate their pissed off populace. The Chinese failed this test, and with that in mind, I believe the next appropriate step for the Western nations and their Eastern European allies to take would be to officially send their officials to Taiwan to support them. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they push for Taiwan to become the East Asian version of Palestine: a UN Observer state.

Sometimes I ask myself, is the world really ending soon, or am I spending too much time on SDF?

Seems like there was more drama here than in the Straits. Not gonna lie, the Chinese response was disappointing, but I remember also being disappointed in the inaction during the HK riots.
I remember that a lot of people from opposite sides of the Hong-Kong-on-fire were hoping that the Beijing would sent PLA troops and tanks to crush those protests and riots in Hong Kong.

The pro-China ones want the chaos and destruction of their city to end ASAP.

The anti-China ones want to act victim in front of the international community by yelling "Look at China! Oppressing and crushing our freedom! Doing Tiananmen 2.0!".

What happened in the end? The PLA garrison in Hong Kong never left their barracks, except for cleaning up blocked and littered streets.

That was Hong Kong just a few years ago. And we are talking about Taiwan right now.

Taiwan is on many magnitudes more challenging and daunting than Hong Kong.

Attacking the USA was a desperate act after getting stuck in China and the Japanese leadership knew it that it would mean the end for Japan in the long run.
