The point isn't doing some exercises and then backing off, because this would mean that the net result of Pelosi's visit has tilted on US' favour.
The real thing is what strategic/long-lasting objectives China will aim to achieve with these exercises as a cover
I always maintained that the answer would be to let Pelosi land and conduct full-scale military exercises. Everything is occurring naturally as I have described.

Seems to me China will be the big winner out of this.

Lost in all the noise, was the reaction of the neighbourhood.
No one supports this trip. No one supports American belligerence.
Once the PRC saw that a couple of days ago, no real point in adding fuel to fire.
Here we have Pelosi escorted by the entire US military.
The message is clear, China for development, America for war.
It is so strange. This is the worst message America can give, yet that is the only message coming through loud and clear.
To illustrate the point further, what this was, this political stunt, was a political rally. It generated a tepid response of support.
This may sound a bit Ah-Q, but hey! China's interest is global. Paint Pelosi and the Americans as belligerent, then that is an enormous win.
Things were so fluid, it was tough to get a handle on it.
There will be more good conclusions from this episode for the PRC.
Painful to say but Nancy Pelosi showed who the alpha (fe)male is and who is not. Zero damns given.
We need to stop with this notion that US is approaching imminent collapse. It is not.

An old hag landed on a plane without getting shot down; that's what makes an American happy. China's continued world-beating growth in technology, making breakthroughs every day at semiconductors and basically everything else, makes Chinese people happy. Easy to see who's pitiful here.
True, but it is getting relegated by a much faster-moving and not-much-behind China.
Japan and Germany did the same mistake. It's a recurring theme of totalitarianism
Indeed, somebody need to kick the doors. Or somehow its political elites suddenly abandon their shared values. Otherwise we may need to wait for decades, if not a century.
