As a way of showing that PLAN can get a 20-frigate class before US will launch the first one from their own 20-ship order.

Jokes aside, we don't know for sure.
Probably a combination of need for more multi-role combatants with delays in 054b development. The international climate is deteriorating, fast.

Furthermore, even if US frigate-printing capability doesn't show much promise yet, JMSDF frigate line actually works.

I am not sure if the idea of not having VLS on your frigates work, nor having an S-band search radar.

Pretty sure they were referring to the production capability of pumping out 20+ frigates to ameliorate the shortfall in fleet numbers, as the JMSDF intends to and has demonstrated to be capable of such, the actual capability of the frigates themselves notwithstanding.

The 056 is being converted to coast guard use. They are removing the HQ-10 and replacing it with an additional satcom.

I am assuming the newest 054A will be using YJ-83 but they don't have the slant stands yet. Maybe they decided to use something else.

Type 054A #39 is about to be launched @Huangpu Shipyards. #40 is in the left, sheltered inside the dock and will be pulled out soon.

Discussion in other Chinese military forum indicates that this vessle could finally be #38 in sequence since the launching of the Hudong vessel which was known as #38 before may be postponed for weeks due to the recent COVID19 endemic in Shanghai.

The new phase array on the Fujian's 1130 CIWS could be another piece falling into place as something that we might potentially see on future 054A or 054B. As mentioned the phase array replaces the Type 347G gunnery radar used on the CIWS, but since the 347G is also used in a standalone mode as the gunnery radar for the 76mm gun, potentially the new phase array (AESA likely) can replace the stand alone 347G for that role as well.

With the exception of the Type 366 radar, every radar on the 054A can now be replaced by their respective AESA successor without changing the ship and modifying the superstructure. Maybe the final batches of 054A maybe built this way and this also offers a blueprint for the 054A MLU.
