054/A FFG Thread II

The new phase array on the Fujian's 1130 CIWS could be another piece falling into place as something that we might potentially see on future 054A or 054B. As mentioned the phase array replaces the Type 347G gunnery radar used on the CIWS, but since the 347G is also used in a standalone mode as the gunnery radar for the 76mm gun, potentially the new phase array (AESA likely) can replace the stand alone 347G for that role as well.

With the exception of the Type 366 radar, every radar on the 054A can now be replaced by their respective AESA successor without changing the ship and modifying the superstructure. Maybe the final batches of 054A maybe built this way and this also offers a blueprint for the 054A MLU.

Power supply may be an issue with running so many AESAs. There is also the issue of cost.

While I can see the justification for upgrading the CIWS sensors, good enough is probably good enough for the 76mm.

With gains in both receive and transmission, an AESA can still gain better performance than a mechanical antenna using the same amount of power, along with concurrent benefits of removing sidelobes, quicker reaction, and faster tracking. It's possible costs per module are also headed down as more AESA are made with the same module design, so the more you make, the more you floor the costs. The modules for this may not be unique for this particular array but can be shared with different sets. The adoption of the new array goes beyond 'good enough' but for a bigger picture including reducing production costs for your MIC, to better resistance from ECM, to quicker reaction, and overall performance.

Thanks to LKJ86/PDF.

I'm eager when I see the wrapping comes off on the gunnery fire control radar on this ship. It maybe that the phase array we first saw on the Fujian's Type 1130 CIWS may become the new standard for the new production onwards, including replacing every previous application of the Type 347G radar. If not this then the next and the next.

A 054A and 054A/P set off for a joint China-Pakistan naval maneuver.

They are practicing defending Shanghai ports and shipping lanes. It’s cool because the Pakistani one is more multi-role as they don’t have destroyers. Together these will protect BRI routes between China Pakistan Economic Corridor and Africa/Middle East.

Indeed .... Soon (by 2027) PN will be having a good mix of 24 surface vessels (FFGs/CORs/OPVs) & 20 sub-surface vessels (SSKs/Shallow water Subs) along with 20 MPAs (Sea Sultan/Sea Eagle) equipped with the latest avionics.
