Those are not concessions in China's view point.

EU and China relationship has been deteriorating long before Ukrainian crisis. The loss of CAI and Huawei issue is China's loss to name a few. These losses have to be returned regardless what China may do to Ukraine crisis.

So EU may be willing to "give", China is not interested in receiving what is always China's belonging as a goodwill. This is similar to Meng Wanzhou's case. Meng would not and China would not accept her release as a "criminal", only total discharge of the accusation without confession is acceptable. China is willing to take the cost of EU's possible aggression.

EU got itself in the shit hole by antagonizing China then jump on the war wagon of US, they have to pay back first before asking for help.
Exactly. As Wang Wenbin said, to steal then give back part of what is stolen is still theft. EU owes China, not the other way around. It has to prove good will and reverse all their damaging accusations and bans on China, plus compensation for damages, before China will stake political and diplomatic capital on even asking Russia and Ukraine for a mediation.

China isn't the one in a rush here, they are the ones whose gas, oil, resources and fertilizer got cut off. They're the ones who don't want an failed state on their borders. They complained about refugees from Yugoslavia before and that was a country of a few million people so they aren't ready for Ukraine.

The idea that China should mediate a ceasefire or have anything to gain from such a role is pure brainless wishful thinking at best; and an incredibly transparent and clumsy attempt to play the ‘Reverse Nixon’ card to drive a wedge between China and Russia at worst.

Russia is going to win this war outright, so what use is mediation?

China might not have wanted this war, but it’s going to have Russia’s back whatever it takes* to win it and also to secure the peace afterwards.

I’d say there is now a better than even chance that this war may have far more wide-ranging and daring ultimate goals than merely securing some strategic breathing space for Russia.

Just look at what this war and the sanctions are doing to the EU economy.

A few years of these sanctions and supply disruptions as well as massive competitive advantages to Chinese industry and the EU may be relegated from King Maker between the US and China-Russia’s new Cold War to economic basket case unable to even help itself.

I think it’s very much wishful thinking that as thing stand, the EU could stay neutral in any future cold or hot war between the US and China-Russia. So the smart long term play might be to bait it into trashing its own economic future so it cannot play a meaningful role even if the do choose sides.

At the same time, China and Russia will use the BRI, AIIB and other means to build Southeast Asia and Central Asia into a new economic powerhouse, future market and potential strategic allies to further offset the diminishing power and role of the EU.

*Obvious red lines being Russia throwing nukes around like candy during a kids party, at which point China will either heighten military tensions with Taiwan to pull America’s focus and forces away from Russia, or send in military forces to fight alongside the Russians directly.

No - if they did that it would only sow discontent towards Chinese amongst Russians. How Russians view Chinese is not much different from how the Europeans view Chinese.

Russia is not China's ally or friend. The two countries are just currently in a partnership of convenience due to common interests and perceived threats, mainly hegemonic Western imperialism. Russia would betray China the instant it would be in her advantage to do so. Don't forget, Russia has supplied advanced military equipment to just about every unfriendly neighbor that China has apart from Taiwan... even South Korea!

China must view Russia as a carefully managed partner rather than a strategic ally. Otherwise, China will only end up burnt in the end. Doubtlessly, in Putins mind, the USSR has suffered a betrayal from China in the Cold War and he would not hesitate to return the favor as long as it benefits him to do so.
They better return territories to China in the future.
