During the First World War, exaggerated or sometimes fabricated stories of German atrocities (some of which were real)
in Belgium were successfully used to mobilize British public support for the war. A particularly inflammatory kind of
'atrocity story' was about nuns being allegedly gang-raped by German soldiers.
"Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Friday that Russian soldiers had committed rape in Ukrainian cities.
Kuleba did not give any evidence for his claim. Reuters was unable to independently verify the claim.
"When bombs fall on your cities, when soldiers rape women in the occupied cities - and we have numerous cases of,
unfortunately, when Russian soldiers rape women in Ukrainian cities ..."
How could Ukraine's government 'know' that there already have been 'numerous cases' of rape?
Have 'numerous' Ukrainian victims filed complaints with Ukrainian authorities?
"Rape Rhetoric and Russia’s War on Ukraine
Putin’s rhetoric towards Ukraine is characteristic of rape culture—and the international community can’t afford to ignore it."
"Those who enact state violence also often employ rape rhetoric. Two weeks before giving the order to invade Ukraine, Putin
was reported to have made reference to a joke about marital rape, saying,
when he spoke of compelling
President Zelinsky to comply with the Minsk agreements. Putin takes a “
” approach in the case of an accord
that Ukraine finds unfavorable, and feels to have been “
”
Zelinsky demurred, agreeing that Ukraine was a beauty, but
in his statement."
"Sexual violence as ‘weapon of war’ to rise after Russia’s invasion, campaigners warn"
"Increasing numbers of
women will endure
wielded as a “weapon of
” in the wake of
invasion of the country, campaigners have warned."
"Oksana Pokalchuk, the director of Amnesty International Ukraine, warned female civilians will bear the brunt of Russia’s invasion.
Speaking to
The Independent from a bomb shelter in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, Ms Pokalchuk said: “It will have a bad impact
on women in the country. Domestic violence and sexual violence rises in wars.'
I am not naive about the brutal realities of war or about the ways that men often 'take advantage' of powerless women.
I would be hardly surprised if some Ukrainian women were or will be raped by Russian soldiers.
But the existence of 'numerous' war crimes requires more supporting evidence than a Ukrainian government claim.
I would add that Westerners (including women) have seldom shown sympathy or even belief toward the many
non-Western women and girls who have been raped by Western soldiers.
