How many new COVID cases did China get to earn this kind of sub-headline? 10,000 or 50,000?
So, no joke, but is it possible that the climate is drastically different from the US and it thus impacted its athletes. However I dont remember hearing anything similar happening in the 2008 Beijing Olympics..
For example, I am following tennis and from what I have seen a lot of athletes have said that it is too hot now in Japan. Djokovic looked quite uncomfortable when he played his first match there

How do you know it's talking about Chinese cases and not about COVID cases in Tokyo? Do you have the original URL?
The media has been talking about COVID cases in Tokyo for many days, it could be about rising cases in Japan.
Yes be that as it may. That's not the point. If you want to point out the case is rising in Japan. Then that deserve a seperate headline away from putting it together with the games first gold medal which happens to be won by China.
You do know journalists and editors have freedom to choose. And by lumping the two together is a....... deliberate choice ...... for a reason!
