IMO, the article is not well researched in the subject and are just repeating unverified information from an unverified source, an example would be this:



Seriously, if the WS-10A was that bad, would it even pass the prototype stage?, never mind the further development of the WS-10A into many of its variants, and its core engine design into what is the WS-20.

They fixed the problem around the 2012-2014 timeframe but at the expense of lowering the thrust on WS-10A. Otherwise they wouldn't have felt confident intercepting a P-8 with a WS-10 J-11B in 2014.

I loathe to post this, as I have no way of verifying its authenticity, but it's interesting nonetheless. Take it with a grain of salt.

This is allegedly the placard for a WS-20 engine display model. It states that in the future, the engine can be used on a certain large passenger plane, a new medium twin-engine transport, and a new generation of long-range anti-submarine patrol aircraft. Thrust rating: 13000 - 16000kgf.

Do we have any sources for the 157 kN figure for WS-20?

Also, isn't the BPR of WS-20 as a Military Turbofan expected to be 5 to 6 range? I don't think the numbers for WS-20 makes good sense.

Unless 145 kN is the dry thrust... In which case I think you are elevating China to be the preeminent power in Turbofan technology!

Chinese engines already (WS-10 series) have the wet thrust of 135-145 kN. But their dry thrust, like most fourth generation heavy engines, score below 100 kN(85-90 kN). WS-15 will have to have its dry thrust above 100 kN to enable supercruise ( considering that J-20 is categorized as a heavy fighter). This also mean that the wet thrust could be in the 165 kN range.

If anything, the maximum thrust capable is going to be traded off for better engine reliability and MTBO. WS-15 will be in the F119 league.

It should compare itself well with F119. There is no other way. The Chinese might as well shut the program down and play mahjong if they can't create it because they already are doing well relatively with WS-10Bs.

The whole point of WS-15 is to enable J-20 to supercruise and maneuver well. It needs F119 and beyond thrusts to do that.

I don't think F135 is an evolutionary leap from F119. The F135 is a "fork" of F119 built especially for the F35 application. The F135 is not a supercruise enabler.An evolutionary leap will happen in the US with the incorporation of CMC and VC technologies among others.

Edit - The US have both these technologies. It's just a matter of execution and Dollaass

Just curious, how are the F135 and F119 different?
