QBZ-191 service rifle family

The Weibo poster made it clear that this is just a mockup of what the underslung grenade launcher might look like when installed on the rifle.

Doesn't really look ergonomic, the hand would have to extend too far out
Not to mention it'd introduce yet another grenade launcher model and new munition.
The likely recourse is modify the grenade launcher module currently the QBZ-95-1 using, perhaps in the fashion of FN EGLM.

Re-read my post.

That is NOT the grenade launcher that will be paired with the new rifle.

The guy attached a random grenade launcher to give you a rough idea of what the rifle + grenade launcher combination might look like. In other words, it was a rudimentary and very bare-boned visual mockup.

It isn't real, nor is it intended to have all the correct and minute ergonomic details.

Looks like I'm gonna be that guy lol. A side mounted grenade launcher is horrible for the following reasons:
1. The balance of the rifle will be extremely off. So when you manipulate your rifle, you are gonna have a very very bad day.
2. Your field of vision will be severely limited, thereby heavily reducing your situational awareness. This will definitely increase your probability of getting killed.

More than likely, it will be an underbarrel configuration. When we consider the PLA's new focus on weapon system modularity, more likely than not, they will either attach a UGL to the mounting points below the handguard or they will introduce an alternative handguard more suitable for the mounting of a UGL. For instance:

Of course a UGL on a rifle will always be more cumbersome than the standalone rifle. With people bringing up arguements that it will be suboptimal in CQB. And indeed it is a suboptimal solution, but the cost benefit of being a little less wieldy for the firepower and capability a grenadier can deliver to a squad is well worth it. The handguard of the DMR version (QBU 191?) would look quite suitable for such a UGL to be attached.

A separate GL is also a solution, but a UGL allows a soldier to bring the firepower of a grenade launcher to bear on the enemy almost immediately, without having to go through your bag to fish out a separate GL that is in itself too bulky to be stored in pouches on your vest.
