Interesting... I wonder whether using elevated railways is a strategic vulnerability for China. If an enemy strikes a ground level railway it can be more easily repaired with a small crew, while an elevated railway would require a whole construction team

IIRC the railway is partly built over permafrost, that's why they use elevated sections.

More on topic that picture of the integrated powerpack assembly for the Type 15 engine is quite impressive.

Out of curiosity, why would you consider it impressive?

Yeah, I understand that geography dictates the use of tunnels and elevated rail in many parts of china especially the mountaineous south and west.

Maybe its possible to build a slower ground-based network for freight on the most important routes for redundancy purposes

PLA's still largely a budget fighting force at this level though. I suppose they've at least got their priorities right.
With a defense budget of over a trillion ¥, the PLA is not a budget fighting force at any level. The guy is wearing the new camo, mechanics gloves, and is swapping the engine of the most modern tank in the arsenal. We don't need to insinuate that the PLAGF can't afford his boots.

It's a really annoying phenomenon on this site, concocting wild stories and speculations out of the most trivial and meaningless details.
