People be patient. Asking any company's to catch up within a few months is close to impossible. We are facing a big challenge. Things need time.

SMIC knocked by mainlanders as lacking backbone because it try to distance itself from Chinese military. So what if it has business with Chinese military.

I think silence is strength. They don't need to offer any explanation to US and also it won't help even if they do.

Look at that title. How do they know SMIC is in shock? Still all a BBC spin. The Western media accuses China of being secretive all the time yet they always seem to know what's going on in China. One of them is a lie which means lying is not a problem. England is the birthplace of tabloid journalism where they will make up what people say and think. They even say when they ask SMIC for comment, they didn't get one so how would they know? Secret anonymous sources? How convenient. And you read the story and saw weakness. Mission accomplish for the BBC.

I think the layman's consensus is that LDW is not suited for mass production.
But this paper says, "This LDW lithography exhibits an attractive capability of well-site control and mass production of ∼5 × 10^5 nanogap electrodes per hour, *breaking the trade-off between resolution and throughput* in a nanofabrication technique." which is the main hindrance to mass production in ldw technique.

∼5 × 10^5 nanogap electrodes per hour, *

How does that compare to masked lithography?

Give back Chinese citizenships if it was given up, thus allowing dual citizenship. This will allow Chinese to travel back and forth more easily to transfer knowledge. Same for the children of those immigrants.

I very much doubt that this will happen. The CCP doesnt want its citizens to have dual nationality, it may create a lot of problems to them.

There's why I also included the next article.
Then nextarticle on them applying for US license for production for Huawei.

Everyone knows it's gonna be denied. Yet they still do it.

Is it for kowtowing from position of weakness hopeful for mercy?

Unlikely be granted!

Because China wants to establish they followed the rules so when it does take action it can't be accused of being unreasonable.

US and China is way beyond cosmetic reasonable or unreasonable stage.
Its life and death struggle now.

Alot other Chinese companies got sanctioned but they didn't even bother to say anything because they know it's useless.

Exactly that is one defect of Chinese state of mind They take the easy way out and don't go the extra mile to do it their own way. Compare that to the Japanese as soon as they get exposed to new technology, they want to do it on their own Eg Toyoda originally a textile yarn equipment manufacturer then imported car but they didn't stop there They built their won in few years.
Coupled with their inferiority complex of worshiping anything import Even now this guy Ren he said he still worshiped US as his technical ancestor even though they want to murder him. What is wrong with this people?
Sure I'm not saying copying is bad or making money is not necessary. I'm just saying that the difference between China and Japan is the Japanese are willing to master the underlying core tech even though it may not be as profitable as just importing it. While most Chinese companies are too driven to make money, meaning that they will just import it. Surely it's not just because of culture, but you have to admit that Chinese people in general have no pride in their work and won't do anything unless there is a profit motive behind it....

It only took Huawei sanctions and a trade war to make Chinese people realize the importance of core tech....
It has nothing to do with copying but everything to do with supporting your local company Eg both Samsung semiconductor and SMIC both started by emigre but that is the only similarity
Samsung family founder Lee took what was then a fledgling venture company under Samsung wing even against the opposition of Samsung board. He end up using his personal money to support the then venture company allowing it to grow because he has vision.

But SMIC languished for 10 years because they have to scrapped the bottom for living. Nobody give them support other than maybe local municipality
Not doing it for fun. Its simply less profitable in the short run to do basic research. But very profitable in the long run to master core tech. It's too bad most companies in China only think short term.
True, goes back to the inferiority complex and lack of collectivism in China. All these companies like Xiaomi and oppo and one plus are busy beating each other up rather than working together to help SMIC. Looks like they will learn a hard lesson once they are all sanctioned.

These criticisms are all too moralistic. If you can’t make money you can’t fund research and development. If you forgo money for research your research will starve too. You need to make more money first in order to capitalize your research so you can keep it going. This was the mistake the Soviets made. Japan and Germany focused on making money first too, and they further had the benefit of not having to do this against headwinds of globalized competition, or with nearly as large a technology gap. It’s not that the tech businesses in China don’t take the time and effort to absorb and study foreign tech, or have pride, or only care about money. If any of that were true the Chinese tech industry wouldn’t have gotten even this far. It’s that there’s a particular sequence and balance of contradicting factors you have to juggle, and it’s not a straightforward process. The anxiety fueled magical thinking and baleful laments in this thread isn’t useful or insightful.
