guys, do you know why r/china_irl is so critical and pessimistic of China? going on that sub makes me feel like I'm reading Gordon Chang everyday, but then again, they are the only fully Chinese subreddit. Should I trust what they say, given they might be much more aware of what is going on the country?

Also, what does the term 反贼 mean? I'm really confused; does it mean someone who is liberal and opposed to the CCP?

FLG TW HK propaganda is actually mainly in Chinese. Be careful when you see places mainly posting anti-china stuff.

There’s always dissent but their voices are drowned out and invalidated by bad actors.

If you want to know what China is like ask family and visit there every once in a while. Most of us have extended families all over the country in rural and urban.

Can I ask you, overall, how would you judge Xi's domestic and economic performance? How about your family members?

Too early to tell, the recent change in American attitude has made things less clear. I am still against him expanding CCP powers in private sector though.

My extended families’ happiness depends mostly on economic performance but are glad COVID was handled well.

I would say Chinese are most proud to be Chinese than any other time in modern history.

Also the issue with assessing the Chinese/US leadership is that they have too much information that we don’t have. We’re judging things based on OSINT. Would be nice if we know what leaders of each side are thinking.

When we talk about China's poverty alleviation effort, we mostly look at the various policies the central government creates.

What's almost never talked about, is how those policies become reality.

Here is an eye opening documentary about China's poverty alleviation commissioners:

Thanks for posting this. I actually know people who have worked first hand in these very same areas. If you didn’t catch it, these people are Yi minority people.

I wish everyone who talks the typical western BS would watch this. CGTN is often called propaganda, but what part of this makes China look good?

The officials in the video talk about Masters Degrees, but the reality I’m told, it’s even an improvement just to do basic factory work.

All the talk about Mandarin education as “cultural genocide”, but what would these people rather have them do? Continue to collect dried grass and twigs for heating fuel? Putting a solid roof over someone's head is not promoting human rights I guess. This is almost a colonial attitude admittedly, but in this case no one is taking their land and resources away.

When Pompeo or those commentators that say "China hasn't changed!", what a joke. Even in a village like that, there is a guy wearing a Nike shirt and kids wearing Mickey Mouse. The truth is bare when you see something like this. America can even influence rural people in the mountains of China, no Great Firewall, "army of censors", etc can stop it. However, when day by day it is a struggle to get by, political issues really aren't on the mind. This is the reality.

Some people say the kids arrested in HK for rioting should rot in jail. I once suggested no, they should be sent to these rural counties and see what real human rights are.

Sometimes I am happy J-7 is still flying because it means the money is being better spent.

I thought the same way about CGTN, and this video changed my mind completely. This is the kind of documentary that China should disseminate more widely.

The part that struck me the most was when the social workers were protecting that 14 year old boy from being hit by his father. Then they told him his father loves him and he needs to listen to his father.

If this was in Canada, the social workers here would just take the child away and place him in some stranger's care. The child would drift from foster home to foster home until he reaches 18, at which point he would be thrust into society with no familial bond and barely any education, to repeat the cycle of domestic abuse anew.

The other thing that struck me was how poverty was defined. It wasn't just a matter of income. You also had to have good living conditions and be able to send your child to school everyday. This is a defining difference from policies here in North America, where the government just writes you a cheque and you're on your own.
