Naval Aviation but what's intersting, the first one has grey serial numbers? That's new since so far all PLAN NA J-11BH and BSH have blue serials like the one in the second image.

Maybe it's part of the low-vis scheme they're trialing on PLA fighters.

I had a similar idea and even more a fear that these include similar to the JL9H and some KJ-500H only grey anonymous two-digit serial numbers.

Care to explain why a regular fighter that is operational within three regiments (or maybe brigades now) should get grey two-digit numbers only "for island chain around to fly in that specific area"?

IMO this is either as @jobjed suggested a test for a new low-viz scheme or a general new introduction of two-digit serials but IMO I see not a single reason to change the system only for "island chain" operations.

Probably a trial run for the higher-risk region. I'm not sure what advantage it will have compared to the regular serials, but if it does give any then it does make sense to roll it out on the region where clashes will most likely happen first, i.e. SEA/Japanese islands.

Indeed a possible explanation but from what I heard they are both from the PLAN Naval university and as such it could fit to the same serial pattern, which is currently implemented to the JL-9H.
