Dollar for dollar doesn't really mean anything when comparing countries. Why is it that Japan and South Korea are still trying to develop a stealth fighter while China is coming up to decade now having one? They're supposedly more advanced yet no stealth fighter of their own. Or look at rare earths. I'm always reading how the West is cheering finding a non-Chinese rare earth deposit. They're everywhere yet it's the refining process that makes it cost so much. So why are they complaining when they can process them on their own? It's because it will always cost them vastly more not getting them from China.

Hi SoupDumplings,

Its a China IC equivalent of a romanticized version of long march, its a hard slug , full of hardship and suffering. China goal is to be a moderate rich nation by 2030, and Hi tech will be one of the sector that is crucial to achieve it. This trade sanction had galvanize the Chinese tech industries, you can sense the urgency and with govt policy/financial support, Im optimistic within 5 years we can see it bear result.

China can develop its own chips. The west will simply ban it. You can only sell it in china’s and a few developing countries. Then what.

hi Petrolicious88

good day

If China develop a new chip that had no counterpart in the west and can produce it locally, then its sanction proof. If they had something that is comparable then its domestic market is huge enough to satisfy it. There is no downside in greater pursuit of China semiconductor industries independence, what is needed is the coordination both private sector and government (already being address). Like I said this Huawei ban and other impose sanction have shaken all parties involved, the urgency is there to fill up all the weakness asap. The most expose sector from what I see is SMIC ability to produce advance chips especially the 5nm.

The China market is large enough to support the high end part, the medium and low end ,the developing country. So the Chinese tech industries can supply all spectrum. Business is based on cost and scale and which country may I ask is capable of doing it all?

china’s goal is to produce national champions like Apple and Samsung. And be able to capture global market share. If it’s goal is to just sell in the Chinese market, then China on cruise control can easily achieve that. But to capture global market, geopolitical factors gets involved. This is especially true when the west has effectively painted Chinese tech companies as untrustworthy.
So it’s not about China developing the best tech, although that’s def needed.

hi Petrolicious88

From my recollection its the other way around, Huawei capture the global market first (except the US) before the China market. If you produce a great product they will come and buy especially if its affordable. Now regarding the geopolitical factors , all country suffer from this pandemic and its aftermath, but which country suffer the most? with dire economic situation most countries follow its owned interest.
I'm not a betting man but I predict that UK will allow its company to use Huawei equipment again if there is NO BREXIT deal and Biden win the election.

But if Chinese chips become the most advanced and/or the lowest cost?

Remember that 60% of the world's semiconductors is consumed or passes through China, so China has the scale to do this.

So any company which deliberately avoids Chinese chips will lose in the global marketplace.

Lol i am little bit confused. US will ban what? From who? You mean US can ban people from Europe buy Chinese stuff? Lol i don't know US have that power already.
P/s: In Vietnam everyone crazy about anti and talk down Chinese and China stuff but still a large amount of people buy and use China product everyday. Even they have ton of group where they can share tip, trick and guides how to buy Chinese products from Taobao, AliExpress etc. Yeah it sounds hypocrite but at the end Vietnamese just like other people around the world buy product by their own money not US money. And I don't see US can control people mind and especially their pocket. So as long as Chinese products have good quality and decent price then everyone will keep buying.
And Huawei smartphones chip is very good. They are on pair with high end Qualcomm chip. Ironically is Samsung is one of leading chip manufacturer but they Exynos smartphones chip is garbage when compare to Kirin and Snapdragon chip.

Actually, I would say it is about China developing the best tech, in this case chips. Global competition will take care of the ban issues, the biggest problem for tech companies is being ‘out-teched’.

For example, server CPU, if China for one reason or another developed a server CPU, with low heat, greater efficiency and at the same price as the current chips, you can be sure that no ban/sanction on this earth will keep data centres from using the CPU, since competitors using the CPU would be able to provide prices that are unbeatable, simply by saving on the air con needed to keep the server blocks from going up in smoke.
