From what I understand, UNISOC is making a "combined" chip, with the 5G modem built in. From my layman knowledge, this might be the same situation with a Huawei 5G chipset?

The CPU and GPU part of the chip is made using an ARM license, I'm not sure if the design is in house like Huawei, although Huawei still pays ARM for the license (in Huawei's case, they bought a lifetime license for ARM ver.8 if I'm not wrong).

And of course, it's still made by TSMC.

The question now is how UNISOC designed and manufactured their 5G modem. Is it using an in house design? Is the 5G modem itself also manufactured using TSMC's 6nm tech?

I'm not really an expert on this, this is what I gathered from reading about Huawei's battle with the US.

Yes, SMIC at 7nm is good news from the Chinese perspective.

But anything better would require access to EUV machines, and they need these now so to start learning how to use them.

SMIC already ordered EUV machine from ASML and I believe will be delivered in mid-2020

Trump admin pressured the Dutch to cancel the EUV order. It appears in indefinite hold.

SMIC's 7nm however, does not require EUV. This is a notable technical achievement, given the trouble Intel tried to go 7nm without EUV.

China is working on a domestic EUV. Its capable of 10nm. China knows it eventually needs to develop it alone and stand on its own two feet. Its a longer term outcome but it is the best outcome.

It doesn't say that the license is cancelled .... If it is it would force China to focus the resources to create similar technology and I have no doubt China would be successful doing it

* Top supercomputer after The US govt banned Intel to China .. China was in the top using its CPU
* Israel AWACS for China (stopped by the US) ... China developed KJ-2000, etc
* Arm embargo to China since 1989 ... Chinese indigenous weapon system developing so fast and now one of the most advanced
* CNC machine embargo ... you see who produce the most CNC? ..... yes China for about 80%
* Ban of China participation to Galileo ... China developed Baidou, now already global challenging GPS while Galileo still stuck
* Ban of China participation in ISS .... China go ahead with Tiangong 2 and soon Chinese large modular space station
* Etc, etc
* EUV embargo ...... guess what would happen ?

Well, the license has not been renewed, has it?

I agree it will spur the development of Chinese alternatives, but that will take some years.
So it's an example of short-term thinking on the part of the Dutch government.
