I agree. WS-20 is not indispensable, but AFAIK it is the first indigenous high-bypass engine of china. They have to show that they can create one by themselves.
Besides, WS-20 is more powerful than WS-18 and will add to the cargo capacity of Y-20.

Image seems recent as personnel are wearing masks for COVID-19 protection (although evidence in this regard is lacking).
It doesn't quite look right. Nozzle doesn't have TVC or even sawtooth. Maybe it is the new medium thrust engine for the JF-17?

I was under the impression that the nozzle type and TVC capabilities can be added as per customer's request.
I thought that the WS-15 is J-20 exclusive? At the very least they need jagged nozzles.

The original post is talking about the bronze relief in the upper right corner. The F-135 is there for comparison only.
Might not be something that they’d bother adding if it’s a development prototype and not a production prototype.
