JF-17 with four HAFR-1 (?) anti-runway bombs.

Chinese dont seem to put much priority on targeting pods, is it wonder other countries products are more fine tuned, after all seeing targeting is relatively rare outside JH-7 units etc.

US and most other nations hang pods under their fighter bellies all the time.

I'm surprised the nose-cone is almost the same... it should be more canted since it houses an AESA now.

The choice of radar emitter array tech has zero impact on the shape of nose cone of an aircraft.

You only need to change the shape of the nose cone if you want a bigger radar array.

Also, AESA radars can be mounted normally or canted, but again, the choice of mounting does not have to impact the size or shape of the nose cone.

Finally, the BLK3 prototype looks to have an all metal nose cone, which could mean it isn’t carrying a radar at all. This would be supported by nose tip mounted pitot tube, which is pretty rare on aircraft with AESA radars, and tend to only be present if the aircraft had such a pitot position before upgrading to AESA. No aircraft that has AESA installed from the get go has a pitot there.

I have a problem with Pakistan abusing China's kindness by attaching foreign electronics to a Chinese plane. China goes out of its way to design a plane for Pakistan and foots the bill out of friendship when Pakistan doesn't have a snowball's chance of doing it alone, shares it IP with Pakistan and sets up local production, then Pakistan spits in China's face by putting foreign electronics on it. What's wrong with Chinese electronics?

If it were a European targeting pod the insult would remain but at least it would be understandable. But this is a Turkish targeting pod. You buy tomatoes and watermelons from Turkey, not electronics.

You think China really cares about this issue. Mistake. China does not care. In politics, national interests are far more important than the nation's face. China pursues pragmatic foreign policy, as long as you do not cross the red line, China will always be tolerant. It is normal for Pakistan to integrate the Turkey system on JF 17, it does not affect China's core interests.

Yes, but an AESA allows for canting of the nose-cone, which improves aerodynamics, doesn't it?

It was my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) that because an AESA doesn't need to pivot mechanically, this allows for changes to the crossection to improve aerodynamics... I thought that was the reason why jets which are upgraded to an AESA usually also get a canted nose-cone...

p.s. as you pointed out this prototype doesnt even have a radar yet... so its possible when they install one it may come with a canted nose cone perhaps

you don’t see that for F-15/16 upgrades.
