Yes, its one of the pre-production prototypes, hopefully not 055, as she is one of my favorites, with a civilian test pilot according to Fox News, Russia....

As noted the first production aircraft is scheduled to deliver today, this will put a damper on the ceremonies, in fact the factory bird was likely going to be doing a formation fly by with the first production aircraft would be my best guess? but that's just me putting the pieces together??? so we shall see what the circumstances were, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that bird was to be part of today's festivities.....

No, it was indeed the first serial production aircraft - alond since no other aircraft was there at that unlucky moment - during a factiry test flight prior to delivery.

Russian sources say there was an issue with the FCS.

Deino what's "No"
?

are you questioning what I said which is
"the second Russian link Today at 4:22 PM
says like shorting in the tail"
?

if so, then ask any individual proficient in the Russian and English languages about the meaning of the sentence Чуть позже поступили предварительные данные о причинах аварии: это был технический

(I of course wouldn't know what's happened in Siberia, but I translated what the Russian source said)

This is a gut punch to the Felon program.
1st this was the First Real SU57. Not a preproduction demonstration bird.
2nd that means that the Russians can’t meet delivery of a unit before the end of the year. That unit was the whole of 2019 down the toilet.
They have to start fresh on production with not just a loss but a technical failure that resulted in a class A.
3rd now they have to rework the control system on top of it to assess what happened and correct it hopefully for them before Production Unit #2 is built. This may mean FBW issues or physical issues. Possibly design reviews.

The prototypes are built using different methods so they'll spend some time checking this new serial production set up. Could have been a result of some production problem or oversight. Engine is using the same ones as the prototypes and FCS should be too.

don't think so.

This is the exact reason why the doing low volume first sample on the production line.

To find the manufacturing /design defect, and to avoid the trap to make dozens of faulty planes, like in the case of F-35 program.

This is the common practice in automotive / aerospace industry ( NOT the US procurement, but the one that the RAF following : )

Except in this case this wasn’t a “Sample line” this would have been unit 01 of Production. You of course want to compare to F35. But F35 is slated for Well over a thousand units. The SU57 is only for a hundred or more. The Russians were targeting now 76 units for sure. Every production unit as such counts for far more than would be with early F35 batches or even F22 units. There is no guarantee that the Russians will build more than 88 units counting the prototypes. So Every production unit is critical and this was the start of production which was already years behind schedule. This is a Gut punch to the program. Not a total kill but a hard blow.

With the F-35 we talk about the first few hundred units, as useless for even training.

They will do good service as static display , I'm sure.

Russia has money to buy as much Su-57 as she wish, there is no restriction about it.

The 7x unit more likely coming from the requirement of the military ,rather than due to any hard budgetary limit.

And again, in this case there is no need to scrap / do deep rework on the few dozen units ( if possible, consider the example of f35)

The Russians following a low cost, low risk development and procurement strategy.

The Su-57 fighter jet that crashed on Tuesday in the Far Eastern Khabarovsk Region had entered a downward spiral at the altitude of 8 km and the pilot’s attempts to fly out of it failed, a source in the aircraft construction industry told TASS on Wednesday.

"The Su-57 was performing a test flight at the altitude of 8,000 meters. After the control system had failed, the fighter jet spontaneously entered a downward spiral and started descending and then crashing," the source said.

According to the source, the pilot tried to switch the aircraft to a horizontal flight in a manual mode, but his efforts failed. "At a critical altitude of 2,000 meters the pilot decided to eject," he said.

On Tuesday, a source in the defense industry told TASS that most likely the jet’s tail control failed.

Unfortunately I quoted the wrong post, I wanted to repl y to AFB;

Yes, and unfortunately my first sources were wrong about it being a pre-production prototype, (bad enough), but heartbreakingly it is 001 the first actual production aircraft scheduled to be inducted into the Air Force. I did know that Deino was speaking to me, and I had a family Christmas Dinner last night, and when I got home, I could not log on??

(said the site was down)??

Anyway, as Terrain stated this is a heart break for our "Flanker Friends", sounds like an FCS failure, the fact that he attempted to recover from 8 thousand meters, and even attempted a "manual override" and still couldn't recover is damning indeed, thankfully she didn't go full bore and he was able to "punch out" successfully....

So we will get to the bottom of this
