I wonder how big a gap there is in advanced technology between India and the West and can they ever hope to catch up? Given their tendency to buy a lot of military gear from the West and Russia rather than develop their own, I doubt they ever will.

Unfortunately it's going to get worse as technology development gets faster due to more computing power and more highly qualified professionals with extensive experience. India lacks both in this aspect. India also lacks the manufacturing aspect which will also take decades to reason where China is currently.

So the 20 year-30 year gap between India and the best will get bigger. Even if they can buy it, the seller can ask anything they want because they know India got no choice.

And they won't be able to reverse engineer because lack manufacturing ability.

If you can't beat the competition, accuse them of denying people's rights like helping to rig elections. It's a typical tactic to deflect negative attention on one's self to someone else.

Huawei has been the biggest target so far obviously, but DJI, TikToc, and others, whichever Chinese companies that are leaders in their fields, are increasingly in the cross-hairs too. The cited reason is either national security threat or ideological nonsense, and is almost always evidence-free. Coupled with mass propaganda and smearing campaigns by MSM and politicians (Xinjiang, Hong Kong, etc.), this kind of viciousness against China is hardly unprecedented, but has been rare in the last several decades.

The difference is that this time around, they smack of insecurity, which easily betrays any shallow hauteur. Also, in this days of social media, the MSM does not have a monopoly of voices and opinions. Facts do travel more easily. All these erode the West, particularly the US's soft power. The world has watched many episodes of similar acts by now.

Remember that huge discussion we had about the future of Huawei? Well, sounds like Hongmeng is out, but the scope is now narrower. Instead of trying to replicate an entire OS, Huawei now only needs to replicate Google Mobile Services.

Meanwhile:

I have forgotten the name of the European company, there was talk in the now closed Huawei threads, that Huawei could reach a deal and use their mobile services.
I gather the company was created a ever-growing market of anti-google users. As well as ever growing user base of millions? it currently has thousands of apps, many of which are found on google android.
Perhaps folks living in Europe might know what mobile service provider I am referring to.

new numbers appeared, and while I'm not a fortune-teller I already commented Saturday at 10:03 AM

I think you're thinking of that alternative app store, which is something different. Apparently that is not the difficulty, but the fact that many apps simply do not work without GMS.

It's a sensationalist title, just like always:

"China's growth runs out of steam clocking in lowest rate in 30 years at 6.5%."
"US economy firing on all four cylinders with growth at 2.5%."
"Japan's economy shows strength with surprise return to growth!"

Everything looks fine considering some downward pressure is to be expected from the trade war, though not a whole lot. China's Q1-Q2-Q3 went 6.4%, 6.2%, 6.0%. Very smooth and quite nice. To put things in perspective, 6% growth is a very nice number even for a very poor small developing country, so yeah, China needs to maintain a "really high GDP growth number" to break through the middle income trap but "really high" is not defined in comparison to the steroidal explosive growth that China pulled off when it was poor as hell and just joined the WTO.

When US was at similar level of GDP, growth rate hardly went above 3%, even went into great recession.
