Saddam was playing a balance between USSR and USA thinking he could be the king of Arabic world by his own right. Kaddafi did the same wanting to be the independent African revolutionary leader. In the end when USA turned against them, USSR/Russia stood still and watched instead of something like Vietnam and Syria. Saddam and Kaddafi pissed off everybody.

Kim and his father are different. Despite the cooling relationship with China, Kim's father travelled to China in his last days to secure Kim's succession was "endorsed" by China. NK has never pissed USSR/Russia. The cooling with China was always kept behind the doors. Most importantly, NK has never ever played equal distance between the two camps of big powers.

To be frank, the Koreans have long history of playing power games (living besides China ever since the beginning of history). They are way more experienced than any political entities in region of Iraq and Libya.

US invaded Iraq/Afghanistan ostensibly because a) WMDs, b) terrorist sponsorship, c) Bin Laden was there.

Ironically, Bin Laden was in Pakistan, which is an Islamist theocracy that is one of the biggest sponsors of terrorist and of course, has tons of WMDs (nukes).

Yet Pakistan is a major non-NATO ally (MNNA) of US... getting billions in aid.

Just PROVES that a) have nukes, b) be friends of China, and c) PROFIT. Not even the US can touch you, even if you have Bin Laden, or threat to nuke NYC.

Where are those American and South Korean journalist who kept on saying China is sidelined and marginalized? Where are they now that NK is paying very public tributary visits which is a sign to Trump that he cannot renege and negotiate in bad faith.

Just so you all know, Xi Jinping has also accepted Kim's invite to Pyongyang in Jun/Jul.

You are spot-on (Correct). The Naysayers don't really understand regional politics, as well as Chinese & Korean cultural differences with the Americans. The South Korean journalist was trying to please the American/General audience with his bias/inaccurate reporting without making in-depth analysis. China I believe played an important role with President Xi encouraging both Kim & Trump to engage constructively in the Singapore Summit held on 12 June 2018. Whether Trump will eventually renege or act in bad faith is a Question Mark, as only time will tell. Negotiation ploys are expected to be used by both the contending parties, with advice/encouragement from reliable & trusted personalities acting for each side. Hopefully, there would be overall success for the Good of all parties & peoples concerned, for the long awaited PEACE in the Korean Peninsular.

Korean peninsula is on the doorsteps of Beijing capital, which is considered by many to be the most strategically important region in all of China (Beijing capital, 16 prefectures)

How can China become a global superpower if it cannot get it's immediate periphery under it's sphere of influence? Even weak dynasties like Sui and Song had Korea kingdoms as tributary. PRC is at least on Ming dynasty level if not greater.

Chinese premier calls on China, ROK to uphold multilateralism, free trade

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Friday called on China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) to uphold the multilateralism and free trade system against the backdrop of a trend of protectionism, unilateralism, and deglobalization.

Li made the remarks when meeting with ROK representatives who attended the first round of Sino-ROK Entrepreneurs and Former High-level Officials Dialogue held Friday in Beijing.

Noting that China and the ROK are neighbors and important partners, Li said bilateral ties have improved and developed while the regional situation has ameliorated, thus the two countries are facing new opportunities to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation.

As major economies in the region and the world, China and the ROK should jointly uphold the multilateralism and the free trade system and boost the liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment amid the trend of protectionism, unilateralism, and deglobalization, said Li.

He expressed the hope that both sides will steadily forge ahead the China-Japan-ROK free trade agreement talks in line with the consensus reached at the China-Japan-ROK leaders' meeting held in Japan in May so as to inject confidence and vitality into the economies of two countries, the region, and the world.

China and the ROK have complementary development advantages, while enterprises from both countries enjoy a sound foundation of cooperation and broad prospects, said Li.

He said China will open wider, further transform government functions, further unleash market vitality, optimize business environment and treat Chinese and foreign enterprises equally.

Li said the Chinese government has attached great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) and continued to take new measures including greatly improving the upper limit of legal compensation for IPR infringement and intensifying law enforcement.

He encouraged ROK enterprises to take the opportunities of China's further opening-up and its economy moving to a high-quality development period to enhance cooperation with China and expand investment in China especially in the central and western parts of China.

Li also called for expansion of landmark projects in the digital area, and joint exploration of third-party market so as to realize win-win cooperation.

ROK representatives agreed that the first round of Sino-ROK Entrepreneurs and Former High-level Officials Dialogue was fruitful and served as a new platform for enterprises from both countries.

They said they have placed high attention on China's innovation-driven development strategy, appreciated the efforts China has made to create a better business environment, and would like to take the opportunities of the restructuring of the Chinese economy and industry upgrading to further expand investment in China and enhance innovation cooperation with China, as well as develop the third-party market in order to boost regional prosperity and stability and contribute to world free trade, they said.

Chung Sye-kyun, former speaker of ROK's National Assembly, and representatives from large ROK companies including SK, Samsung, and Hyundai attended the meeting.

The negotiations between Trump & Kim have not ended. Still a long way off, as both the US & DPKR are watching various "moves & counter moves" like in a game of chess . In the final analysis, South Korea wants & is working towards Peace in the Korean Peninsular. President Xi plays an important role as a respected & experienced advisor to Kim. Let's hope that in the long run, there will be realistic agreements between the parties concerned without irrational and suspicious behaviours by either party. For the sake of both the Koreas, the region and the world at large "Let there be Peace on Earth".
