From Henri K blog. I guess they now invite the navy personnel on board for familiarization or inspection So first trial is imminent. Chinese new year is coming Feb 18 so they want to get as much done by then

There is precedence for that, multi carrier groups afford greater aircraft deployment, faster sortie and multi tasking. You also would not need as many ships to protect them as would 2 separate battle groups. The down side of course is you reduce the area of deployment, and multiple carriers makes for a more tempting target for a more determined enemy assault.
Now whether the PLAN would eventually consider multi carrier ops is still debatable. Though I don't see it happening in the near future, CV-16 is still in the end a training ship first and foremost. The 2 ships might train together to build up the PLAN skills in carrier ops but a real operational patrol or mission is very unlikely.
CVBG-16 (PLANS Liaoning Carrier Battle Group) is definitely not a Training ships.
If CV-16 is a Training ship, China's Navy will put an Admiral name in that ship instead of a Province name.
The using of Province name in CV-16 tell us that it is a Combat Vessel.
But yes, China's Ofiicial always show low profile.
because they know, 1 wrong word regarding their Aircraft Carriers fleet. Most Western media and "experts" who have biased view toward China's Development will say China is preparing WW3 and Doom days is counting.
Just look at when South China Sea issue stilll hot because Philipines tribunal and China's Naval Base in their Southern seas still not active, they send CVBG-16 to patrol their Territory from other countries who try to claim and grab their South China Sea.
Gladly, today their Naval base already Active to Secure and keep Shipping lines open in South China Sea from outsiders and Pirates.
And I believe it's only a matter of time that CV-16 and CV-17 to do some Patrol mission together when condition is right. Maybe not a convoy mission like Forbin's picture but more like Joint Operations.
Yes in the peace and calm period like this their Aircraft Carriers will keep training and training their growing Naval Aviation Forces, just like other countries
