Just a comment from me ... it looks the flame are different, the Chinese one, seems an electric type while the US one old type conventional flame

Correct...the USN ships still using boilers are older. They are all LHDs & LCCs...Those LCCs are over 45 years old. LHD-1 thru LHD-6 have boilers.

LHD-7 has Electric drive powered by LM-2500s as do LHA-6 and LHA-7.

USN ships, DDGs & CGs are operating with

20V 8000 Series diesel engines and the LM2500.

I'd like to know more about the device the PLAN uses to light the boilers. Looks interesting.

Lieutenant General
can an aircraft carrier be considered combat ready if it can't perform night operations? no judging, just curious

Because you don't see doesn't mean it never happened. The PLAN doesn't owe you or the world proof every step of the way of Carrier qualification

This PLAN shipmate is lighting a boiler aboard CV-16. The boiler room/main machinery space is very clean & well maintained. To me as an old salt he's missing his safety gear. Boilers are know to backfire and explode. Check out the gear the USN wears when lighting off boilers. Note the faceshield and special fire resistant clothing and heavy duty gloves.

This shipmate was disfigured by a boiler explosion aboard USS Frank Cable...

It looks like the lighter is gas powered.

whoa! steady on .. it was a perfectly reasonable question.. I personally would say if it isnt qualifed for night ops, then it is NOT fully combat capable; but as Sangyes said , he wasnt judging, only asking the question. And as seems to be the case, there is no evidence of night ops being carried out. lack of evidence however does not mean it hasn't happened though.

I agree. An aircraft carrier should be able to conduct strike mission around the clock...Around the clock all weather operations is fully mission capable.
