ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

Defeating ISIS is actually easy. Defeating ISIS w/o leaving a power vacuum filled by Shia controlled government is difficult hence the quagmire.
The US has become ineffective because we do not want to alienated our allies (turkey, Saudis, gulf states) and we also do not want a post ISIS Syria to be an ally of Iran and Russia. Israel is also a huge influence on Washington and their sworn enemy is Iran not ISIS. They would rather have a never ending perpetual war with ISIS than to have a Shia friendly neighbor.
Again as with all the fluster luck that is the Middle East today, everything boils down again to Sunni vs Shia no matter how you slice it.
ISIS continues to become a menace because of this political roadblock between the parties.
You take all that fluff away and this is essentially the truth wheater we like to admit it or not.

I do not share the same sentiment as you that defeating ISIS will be easy. ISIS is not just a terrorist organisation but is driven by a mandated vision of political Islam to establish a Muslim Caliphate. This has tremendous appeal to all Muslims and a minority is prepared to act it out. The genie is now out of the bottle so to speak in that the vision is embodied by captured territory to realise what had been before was simply an idea. The Ottoman empire was symbolic of that vision until that empire was truncated to now what is Turkey. It is no strange coincidence that Turkey is somehow inserted in this terrible political mess. If the vision has past its tipping point it is no longer easy to put the genie back into the bottle. Bullets and bombs can't kill an idea/vision if there are enough believers who are prepared to act it out.

The conflict between Sunni and Shia is simply a power struggle between two Muslim groups who has a different vision on how the mantle of their prophet was passed on.

Until there is a recognition that any solution is not just simply political but has a heavy religious bend to it, any solutions would just be a band aid and temporal.

Four Syrian Soldiers Die in Suspected U.S. Coalition Strike-Group

BEIRUT — An air strike believed to have been carried out by the U.S.-led coalition killed four Syrian military personnel in Deir al Zor province, which is mostly held by Islamic State, a monitoring group said on Monday, in what would be the first time coalition warplanes had hit Syrian government forces.

A source close to the Syrian government confirmed the strike and said there had been casualties and vehicles destroyed.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strike hit part of the Saeqa military camp near the town of Ayyash in western Deir al Zor province and wounded 13 military personnel in the first such incident since the coalition began its bombing campaign against Islamic State in Syria.

The strike had hit some time in the last 24 hours, it said.

The U.S.-led force's campaign is against Islamic State, which controls most of Deir al Zor, including its capital, and has regularly targeted the group in the eastern Syrian province.

In Deir al Zor city, another air strike believed to be carried out by the coalition overnight killed a woman and two of her children, the Observatory said.

Deir al Zor province links Islamic State's de facto capital in Raqqa with territory controlled by the group in Iraq, and its oilfields are a major source of revenue for the group.

Assad is Shia? That's news to me.

Strange how Shia and Sunni managed to not only not exterminate each other, but actually live fairly peaceably and co-operate together until a certain President decided to try and outdo his old man.

There were rivalries and fierce ideological disagreements between Shia and Sunni for millennia, just as there were rivalries and fierce ideological disagreements between Catholics and Protestants over the centuries. But there wasn't the wholesale genocidal bloodletting we are seeing today until after 2003.

The US should not bear the sole or even main blame for that, because it was the International Jihadists who rushed into Iraqi to fight the Americans who first started to stoke that fire as a means to get more locals on board with their anti-American war.

But it would be just as wrong for the US to shirk all responsibility and try to pin the blame entirely on the "savage locals" and play the innocent party in this. Not least because far from rejecting and resisting this, much of the success of the much vaunted American Surge was based on exploiting this dangerous fault line.

Super Etendard to Akrotiri !

Super Etendard modernized : SEM

...
Two Super Etendard modernized from Flotilla 17F, landed on the British base.According to the images of a video released by the British Ministry of Defense, at least two Super Etendard modernized, a patrol landed on the base of Akrotiri.

The date of their arrival on this basis is not known, but what is on is that on the evening of Friday, December 4, 2015, the SEM were parked on the tarmac. Both belong to the SEM GAE, on board the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, and deployed since 23 November off the coast of Syria, in the eastern Mediterranean.

The entire battle group is integrated within the Chammal operation and aims to hit the Organization Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. On video communication the British armed forces, the scene where you can see both SEM lasts no more than eight seconds.

Parked on the tarmac, the first device seems to be equipped with two external fuel tanks under the wings with a flight refueling pod under the belly of the device (configuration "nanny").
The second could be also equipped with two external tank, and it would seem that laser designation pod is attached about to ventral carriage. Both devices do not appear to carry air-to-ground bombs.

• Akrotiri : How useful for France ?
Excluding here mechanical problem forcing one of the two devices to ask a contingency based because it can not apponter on the Charles de Gaulle, the British base of Akrotiri was able to welcome both of SEM other reasons.

The first is simply a response to the proposal made by David Cameron. To certify that the database is able to accommodate and operate within it with Super-Etendard modernized, the Navy deployed two of its aircraft in order to conduct tests and thus validate the interoperability between the base and French aircraft.SEM also arisen on the basis of Akrotiri to refuel kerosene before moving the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

Both devices may not have refueled from a tanker from the coalition because of the absence of one of them were operating in the area where the SEM, or due to mechanical failure that would have touched a supply vessel, which would have forced him to return to his base.

Lack of kerosene to return and land on the Charles de Gaulle would have forced the SEM to ask in Akrotiri. If the base is not necessarily useful for performing operations departures since it has Air Base Projected Jordan and, when he is on area of the aircraft carrier, it can be, for example, if a French unit must divert due to a technical problem that occurs during a mission.

Its proximity to the theater, about 265 km between the base and the Syrian coast, makes it an important element if a diversion is to be made. Especially when going or returning from a mission with a carrier fighter on the Charles de Gaulle.

Guys, STOP the political/ideological rhetoric, and similar response to it, on either side.

The US is not joining or a part of any pro-ISIS group. This is pure propaganda and political/ideological posturing and will not be tolerated here on SD, any more than similar posts regarding, say, China, would be.

This forum is NOT anti-US, or anti-Russian, or anti-Chinese, etc. and is not a place to vent your ideological/political rants, or to search for and post OpEds and reporting that supports it.

Do not make snide or derogatory comments towards members of this forum in line with, or in some kind of political/ideological vein associated with your political/ideological thoughts/feelings/posts on this thread or here at SD.

This thread is for reporting on the military positioning of forces, the use of military./defense equipment and technology, and the general disposition of forces in a non-political, non-rhetorical, non-ideological basis. If you do not like that...then do not post here.

Consider this a warning to all members engaged in such behavior. The next instances of this type of posting will be met with suspensions.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MODERATION.
