FN or F? I thought it was the F.
Well, I would say Deino was pretty emphatic about it being the FN from his post. No question whatsoever about it.

...and, since Deino is an extremely well respected and well written researcher on Chinese aircraft, I would take what he says when he is this emphatic like this to the bank any day of the week...and twice on Tuesdays!

To admit to be sure we need to get a look on an engine itself; from the exhaust both are (as far as I know) identically.

But given the fact that CAC specifically wanted a "gear-box on the bottom" version of the Flanker's AL-31F for the J-10 that became the AL-31FN and again that it specifically wanted a "gear-box on the bottom" version of the Fulcrum's RD-33 for the FC-1 that became the RD-93 I'm almost sure that the J-20 uses also a "gear-box on the bottom" version of the AL-31F, and as such the FN !

Isn't the bottom gearbox more to do with the Flanker's design? You will technically need to make a lot of changes if the gearbox is positioned at the bottom on a Flanker, specifically making major design changes to the airframe. Most other aircraft engines have their gearboxes at the bottom.

The basic variant boasts those gearboxes mounted on top of the engine, which resulted from peculiarities of the Su-27's aerodynamic configuration.

Lowering the drag of the airplane demanded engine’s gearbox transposition on the top of the engine.

I know about Deino. Just that when something doesn't make sense to me, I make it a habit to point it out.

Sorry if I was not precisely enough ... all Flankers have the AL-31F with the gearbox mounted on top of the engine exactly as shown in Your link (

) ... the J-10A uses the AL-31FN with the gearbox mounted on the bottom, the FC-1 uses the RD-93 with its gearbox on the bottom ... I don't see a reason why the J-20 should use one with its gearbox on top !?

Okay. Big mistake. I thought we were talking about Flankers all along. Okay, I'm gonna go to a corner and shoot myself in the head.

Any guesses as to how long the Chinese will take to replace their remaining Su-27SK/UBK and J-11 with J-11B/Ds and J-16s? A source stated a while ago that the Chinese had more of these Sukhoi derivatives than the Russians themselves.

First priority would be to replace J-7 and J-8 . Su-27 could still solider on into 2020's with MLU .

If 1 for 1 replacement is sought for, some 800-1000 remaining j7/j8 of various models would require 16-20 years to replace by new planes using current production levels.
