China will use J-10, J-11(yes, J-11), JH-7, and KJ-200 for a supposed anti-terrorism exercise. Russia is sending Su-25s.

Does anyone else think that this is a bit excessive for an anti-terrorism exercise?

Also, I wonder if they will use J-11Bs this time. Probably will be top news if they use Taihang-equipped J-11Bs.

PLANAF will send Su-30s to their first ever "free-style" air combat exercise with PLAAF.

Do you think that the Su-30s will do well against the J-10s and J-11s?

Quite a bit of air power for an anti-terrorism exercise, but it's good training and experience for PLAx personnel.

In other news category, why would PLAN send Su-30s in Top Gun competitions than J-15s? I'd think PLAN aviation would want realistic training on the real McCoy as often as possible.

Same basic airframe/airplane, no big difference in performance, and the J-15 is way to new to risk playing around in a " Red Flag" as people/airplanes will be put in harms way, the J-15 is not quite ready to be flown into the fire!

What brat said. I don't think the J-15s are ready for air-combat exercise yet. Once they enter service in bulk and the pilots are familiar with them (2-3 years) maybe they'll exercise with PLAAF.

Currently the best PLANAF pilots fly Su-30s (the only 4th gen PLANAF aircraft until quite recently).

How well does J11 fair against Su30MKI? both are derivatives of same design, but have major modifications...

The standard J-11 is a Flanker derivative, The J-11B on the other hand may have some performance advantages, due to improved materials, and avionics.... So the Su-30MKI and the J-11 fit the brats SOP adage, that a Flanker is a Flanker, is a Flanker. Even the T-50 is a swoopy, high zoot Flanker, but it should have much higher performance with much reduced weight, aerodynamic redesign, and OVT, not to mention its additional LO qualities???'

So it would basically come down to the tactical advantage of the specific operator, avionics possibly helping or hurting each aviator???

Su30MKI has quite advanced avionics when compared to Su27, and other Su30s, but don't know about J11's avionics...

J-15 is still in a test phase, even with the 8-10 production aircraft.

It will be some time before they are completely qualified, even at IOC, and ready for those head up exercises with other PLA aircraft, simulating combat.

J-11B is not as advanced as the SU-30MKI as its only uses a planar array radar while the SU-30MKI has a advanced PESA radar and TVC control. Most of the J-11B are single seat fighters while the SU-30MKI is a twin seat fighter. The up and coming J-16 will make a better comparison with SU-30MKI as it has a AESA radar and it is equipped with a new generation of sensors and avionics. And its a twin seat fighter like the SU-30MKI. Both the J-11B and the J-16 does lack the TVC control of the SU-30MKI but they have a better T/W ratio and a smaller RCS.

Thank you for the clarification Franklin, the various and sundry Flanker derivetives are sometimes hard to follow, and OVT will definitely give you an edge if it gets to a very close in shooting match.
